Boredom Busters: Chemistry

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Chemistry!

Sugar Crystals (Rock Candy): https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/grow-sugar-crystals-rock-candy/

You can also use food colouring and flavour extracts to add some extra fun to this experiment. Try some different things and see what works best!

Elemental Haiku: https://vis.sciencemag.org/chemhaiku/

How cool is this? And perfect for Poetry Month! Read up on some of these haiku poems, and then try to create your own. Mary Soon Lee wrote an entire book of them!

Check out this interactive Periodic Table of Elements!

Cloud in a Jar: https://www.giftofcuriosity.com/weather-science-how-to-make-a-cloud-in-a-jar/

All you need for this chemistry experiment is a lidded jar, ice, hot water, and hairspray!

If you don't have hairspray, try the variation below with matches - with parent supervision, of course.

Watercolour with Salt: https://www.scratchmadejournal.com/blog/painting-with-salt-watercolor-tutorial

This is a great project to experiment with. Create some fantastically textured snowy scenes with black paper and white paint. Create a rain-spotted scene with blues and greens. The only limit is your imagination!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day and get your family engaging in the joys of chemistry.

If your kids loved these activities, feel free to send us feedback or pictures on any of our social media platforms, linked below.
