1000 Books Week Thirty-One

Did everyone have a Merry Christmas? (Or Happy Holiday, if you prefer) I certainly did! Lots of fun with family and friends!

Our last Star Reader of the Week was Cory.

This week's Star Reader is Jacob! Congratulations!

Also, a big hooray for our colouring contest winners!

Great job everyone!

Our last Book of the Week was "Little Critter's The Night Before Christmas", a charming addition to the Little Critter's series.

Our thirty-first Book of the Week is "Wishes", by Jean Little.

"Make a wish and the sky's the limit in this delightful rhyming story from the incomparable Jean Little.

If wishes were ice cream, our cones would be doubles.
If wishes were soapsuds, we'd blow shining bubbles.

In this charming new picture book, children and their wild imaginations take centre stage! In a true celebration of wishers and dreamers, Jean Little entertains readers with bouncy rhymes depicting kids' favourite wishes — from puppies to pancakes; and sundaes to snowflakes.
Governor General's award-winning Canadian illustrator Geneviève Côté infuses each page with her inventive illustrations, literally turning each spread into a carnival of fun!
If wishes were stories, there would only be one — this one!" - North Winds Press
Stay tuned for our next Star Reader and Book of the Week! Have a Happy New Year!

View full imageView full imageRudolph, the red nosed reindeer...... (hands up like antlers)
Had a very shiny nose....(point to nose)
And if you ever saw it...(wooo, wooo!)
You would even say it glows....(hands out around face "glowing")

All of the other reindeer...(hands up like antlers)
Used to laugh and call him names...(make "raspberries" with mouth)
They never let poor Rudolph...(boo, hoo...use hands to wipe tears while saying it)

Join in any reindeer games...(slap legs, clap, hands out, clap)
Then one foggy Christmas eve,
Santa came to say: (we use deep voices now)
Rudolph with your nose so bright, Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?
Then all the reindeer ...(hands up for antlers) loved him
As they shouted out with glee...(rah-rah, ziss-boom-bah!)

You'll go down in history!

1000 Books Week Twenty-Seven

It's December! 24 sleeps until Santa comes! Time for snowball fights and snow angels and sleigh rides and all of the awesome Christmas tidings! Did anyone else watch the Santa Claus parade last night? How about that tractor?!

Our last Star Reader of the Week was Axton.

This week's Star Reader is Cody! Congratulations!

Our last Book of the Week was a cute "Little Miss Austen" board book: "Pride and Prejudice: a Counting Primer" by Jennifer Adams. We've ordered the set, so be on the lookout for more "Little Miss Austen board books at the library!

Our twenty-seventh Book of the Week is "Sprocket's Christmas Tale", by Louise Gikow.

“Poor Sprocket is very depressed. It’s the night before Christmas, and he still doesn’t have a present for Doc. Last year it had been easy; Sprocket had given Doc a wonderful old hammer he found in a trash can. Bit this year Sprocket hadn’t found the right gift, and now it’s too late. It’s snowing outside and Doc will soon be home from his annual Boy Scout reunion.
But unbeknownst to Sprocket, Traveling Matt is trudging through the snow towards Doc's workshop and Fraggle Rock. And through a strange turn of events that leaves everyone a little bit confused, Matt ends up solving poor Sprocket's problem." - Henry Holth & Co.

If you love Fraggle Rock as much as I do, check out this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI-uoZlyqCY

The Sylvan Lake Library is also holding a couple of Christmas contests!

For teens, we are having a "Draw Your Christmas" contest. If your child is between the ages of 13 and 18, have them draw their favorite thing about Christmas, their Dream Christmas, or their favorite Christmas memory. Submit it to the library with their name and contact information for the chance to win a fantastic Christmas Present!

Both of these contests end December 21st. Winners will be announced December 22nd.
