Bored Busters: All About Bees

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is All About Bees!

The Importance of Bees: https://climatekids.nasa.gov/bees/

Bees are pollinators; they move pollen from one plant to another, which helps fertilize the plants that grow the food we eat, such as apples, oranges, pumpkins, almonds, and many other foods that develop from a flower. Without pollinators like bees, we would have to say goodbye to a lot of food that we love!

Bee Facts: https://www.coolkidfacts.com/bee-facts/

There are lots of fun facts about bees to learn!

- Bees make honey
- Bees live in almost every part of the world except Antarctica
- Bees eat nectar and pollen from flowers
- Bees protect themselves by building their hive in a hard to find - or hard to reach - spot
- As long as you don't bug them, they won't bug you!

Fun fact: this series pf photos were taken by me, in Sylvan Lake, a few summers ago. It had been raining, and this bee landed on m windshield. Its wings were wet from the rain, and it couldn't take off. I'm allergic to bees, so with the windshield between us and me safely in my car, this was the closest I had ever been to a bee without being afraid. I watched the bee for a little while as it used its legs to clean itself, and tried not to get blown away. I had to drive home, but I didn't want the bee to fly off my windshield, so I drove very slowly - about 15 km/hr.

The bee stayed on my windshield the entire time. I had to stop a few times along the way, and while I did I took some more photos. I couldn't believe I was getting such a close up look at this bee, trying not to get blown away before its wings could dry. When I arrived home, I watched the bee a little while longer. It seemed to watch me back. I moved my finger along the inside of the window, and he followed my finger across the windshield. It was such a strange experience, but one that has stayed with me for years.

I used to be terrified of bees. If stung, I could get very sick and possibly die. I know how to react around bees so they don't feel threatened and don't try to sting me. But this experience changed the way I feel about bees. I'm still calm around them so that I don't get stung. But it's a peaceful, happy calm now. Bees don't want to hurt us, and we shouldn't want to hurt them. We can co-exist, and be kind to each other.

This bee's wings eventually dried and it flew away. Off to pollinate more flowers and drink up some yummy nectar. I hope he lived a good life. And I love his little smile.

Bee Crafts: https://buggyandbuddy.com/15-bee-crafts-kids/

Bee crafts are fun to do, and get us thinking about these helpful pollinators.

Try this Yarn-Wrapped Egg Carton Bee! Or this Wooden Spoon Bee Craft!

Boredom Busters - Chalk Games

Today's theme is Chalk Games!

Chalk Games: https://www.makeandtakes.com/sidewalk-chalk-activities-and-games

Chalk is so diverse! You can make so many fantastic and engaging games and activities with it! Try out some of these fun games made more fun with chalk:

Checkers: create your own checkers board, and use found objects like rocks or pine cones for your pieces.

Dots and Lines: do you remember playing SOS on graph paper as a kid? This is a little like that. Have the kids create a grid of dots, and start connecting the lines. If you complete a square on the grid, your initials go in to mark your point. See who has the most points when you're finished!

Tic Tac Toe: the sidewalk is your canvas! Draw out your tic tac toe grids, and try different ways to play. Tossing bean bags towards your grid is a great way to make this classic game more challenging!

Bullseye: this one is fairly self explanatory - but so fun! Draw out your target(s), assign points to each ring of the bullseye, and toss a bean bag or other item to try and get as many points as you can. Make your targets as big, small, or complex as you like!

Twister: arguably my favourite of these chalk art games. This is great for a driveway or open piece of pavement - stay off the road, friends!

Sidewalk Simon: How many letters in a sequence can you remember? Try it out with Sidewalk Simon!

Obstacle Course: Draw out different paths and challenges, and see who can make the best obstacle course! Check out this video from Pinkalicious and Peterrific!

Check out more chalk games here!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in playing some epic chalk games!

Today's theme is Recycled Art!

Cork Love Bugs: https://www.notimeforflashcards.com/2014/01/cork-love-bugs-valentines-day-craft.html

This is a perfect craft for anyone with a collection of wine corks hanging around. Put them to good use with these adorable love bugs!

There are so many great crafts you can do with wine corks. Check out these DIY Stamps!

Juice Jug Rocket: https://www.notimeforflashcards.com/2009/08/recycled-rocket-craft.html

How cool is this? Let your imagination take flight with this recycled rocket ship! Make it your own with some fun embellishments. Don't have foam for rocket flames? Try tissue paper or construction paper. You can even cut up some old fabric! The possibilities are endless!

Soda Bottle Flower Prints: https://innerchildfun.com/2010/03/flower-prints-from-soda-bottles.html

This is a great project that turns even the most skeptic kids (and adults) into artists! Pick an assortment of bottles and colors, and create your own flower garden! Make a background for a place-mat. Make your own greeting cards. So many colourful options!

Newspaper Pirate Hat: https://www.notimeforflashcards.com/2008/06/arrrrr-matey.html

Okay, this might be the coolest one yet! Before you recycle those newspapers, revamp them into a fantastic opportunity for dramatic play! Bingo dabbers work great, but markers or paint do just as well! While you're waiting for your newspaper to try, check out Puppy Pirates #4: Sea Sick on cloudLibrary!

Here's a throwback to one of our very first Art Attack projects! Who remembers when the library looked like this? This was were Adult Fiction and Adul Non-Fiction used to be!

Melted Crayon Dot Art: http://www.piecesbypolly.com/2011/09/melted-crayon-art-and-pointillism-books.html

Today's theme is All About Wolves!

Fun Facts: https://www.coolkidfacts.com/wolf-facts/

Wolves may look like big dogs, but there's a lot more to them than that. Did you know that even though wolves are carnivores, they'll sometimes add fruits like apples, pears, berries, and melons to their diet?

One lesson that wolves teach us is that we are stronger when we work as a team - when we're part of a pack!

Learn some more fun facts about wolves from National Geographic!

Crafty Puppets: https://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/paper_bag_wolf_puppet.htm

Make your own paper bag wolf puppet! Print out the template, or use it as a guideline to draw and cut out your own pieces!

Make a few, and you'll have your own pack!

How to Draw a Wolf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nQBMmyVspA

Follow along with some Youtube tutorials to learn how to draw a realistic wolf! Add your own flair to it, with some fun colors or different scenery.

Check out some of these live streams from the Wolf Conservation Center! You can watch their enclosure cams, or their den cams.

Does it surprise you that they enjoy napping as much as we do?

We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Get Moving Those Muscles!

Yoga for Kids: https://www.yogajournal.com/poses/yoga-for/kids

Yoga is a great way to wake your body up in the morning and start your day off right. Follow along with some of these poses, and don't forget to breathe!

Freeze Dance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1vdKfXlB_g

Playing freeze dance is a great way to get your muscles moving and your blood pumping! This is a great cardio activity - and a funny one too. See what crazy poses you can get caught in when the music stops! Try it with any songs you love!

DIY Balance Beam: https://www.preschoollearningonline.com/preschool-activities/masking-tape-balance-beam-coordination.html

Balance beams are great for - you guessed it - balance! But they also help build coordination, stamina, and muscle memory!

Make your own balance beams with whatever you have at home - tape, pool noodles, throw cushions - if it works, it works!

The Floor is Lava: https://www.tipsonlifeandlove.com/parenting/how-to-play-the-floor-is-lava-a-fun-game-for-you-and-your-kids-video

This is a great game to play sporadically throughout the day, but you can make it a longer challenge by devising ways to get from one place to another without touching the floor. Be safe and have fun!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family excited about moving those muscles!

Boredom Busters: Spring Into the Kitchen

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. Today's theme is Spring Into the Kitchen!

No Bake Desserts: https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/g2887/138-no-bake-desserts/

I know, it seems strange to start off a baking blog with "no bake", but some of my favorite recipes happen outside of the oven.

Take these Oreo Cookie Balls for instance. They are a delicious and classy treat, with very minimal work/prep. Add a little peppermint extract, and you have mint chocolate truffles!

For this Icebox Cake recipe, all you need is heavy cream, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and chocolate wafer cookies.

Another great tried and true no-bake snack is Confetti Squares! These are delciously wicked, and so easy to make!

Smoothies: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/articles/50-smoothies

Smoothies are a delicious, refreshing treat that have the added bonus of being good for you.

Try something classic, like a Banana Smoothie. Add a little bit of orange and some greek yogurt to this smoothie for an extra zing!

Raspberry Orange Smoothies are so delicious and taste like summer! Ignore those snowflakes that keep falling blend up some summery goodness!

If you want something a little different, try the Spa Cucumber Smoothie! A little cucumber, a little lime, a lot of deliciousness!

Dessert Bars: https://www.thespruceeats.com/best-bar-cookies-480410

We'll end with some scrumptious dessert bars. They are tried and true comfort food, and who can resist sneaking an extra one (or two)?

Keep up with that ode to summer with some Key Lime Bars.

If you have any apples leftover from Easter, give these Apple Pie Bars a try!

For a little more summery goodness, try these Blueberry Cake Bars. Get creative, and have fun in the kitchen!

And finally, my personal favourite: Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake Bars. Sooooo good!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family excited about springing into the kitchen for some delicious fun!

Boredom Busters: Zentangles

Today's theme is Zentangles!

First, let's look at the benefits of the Zentangle Method.

- Relaxation
- Focus
- Expand your imagination
- Increase your awareness
- Respond confidently to the unexpected

There are so many benefits to zengtangles. Let's try some of these wacky designs ourselves!

Eight Steps of the Zentangle Method: https://zentangle.com/pages/get-started

The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structered patterns. Follow these basic steps to get comfortable zentangling.

Zentangle Alphabet Colouring Pages: http://www.supercoloring.com/coloring-pages/letters-and-alphabet/zentangle-alphabet

You can create some beautiful and intricate designs with Zentangle letters. Check out some of these patterns to color in, and then try some of your own. Your name would look great in zentangles!

Zentangle Colouring Book: https://mymodernmet.com/zentangle-art/

There are so many great art projects you can do with Zentangles. Art journaling, comic art, silhouette art, etc. Dive in and get creative - it's so easy with this project! Don't worry about finishing it all in one sitting. Work on it at your leisure, and as inspiration comes to you. It's a wonderful project for de-stressing.

Once you're ready to expand on your zentangles, check out some other methods, like how to incorporate watercolours!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaging in the creative world of Zentangles!

Boredom Busters: Watercolour Art

Today's theme is Watercolour Art!

DIY Marbled Paper: https://artfulparent.com/diy-marbled-paper/

For a baby-friendly variation of this activity, use whipped cream instead of shaving cream, and food colouring works great!

Scribble Drawings: https://artfulparent.com/scribble-drawings-with-watercolor-paint-gorgeous-and-abstract/

This is a fantastic process art activity. Create a series of scribbles and squiggles, and fill them in with different watercolours. Each picture is as unique as it is colourful!

For an bonus activity, use 4x6 inch paper to make prints for cards/postcards!

Pointillism Art: https://artfulparent.com/pointillism-art-for-kids/

We've done our fair share of pointillism art - Q-Tip painting! It's such a fun and different way to paint. Try some free painting, and then bring in some specific shapes. Have them create their own connect-the-dots. The possibilities are endless!

Blow Painting: https://artfulparent.com/blow-painting-with-straws/

This activity will definitely strengthen your lungs! Blow through a straw, for a targeted approach, or just use your own lips and go splatter-crazy! You can try different lengths of straws to see which is most comfortable.

Use a toothpick or other narrow instrument to add some embellishments to your art. So many possibilities!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaging in the wonder of watercolour art.
