M is for the Magical World of Music!

M is for matchstick, monkey, manners, milk, mud, medicine, mask, mail, Mozart, miles, magical, and music!

This week's story time was all about music!

We read:

Jazz Baby, by Lisa Wheeler

http://www.lisawheelerbooks.com/LW/jazz.html

"“Brother’s hands tap.
Sister’s hands snap.
Itty-bitty Baby’s hands clap-clap-clap!”

I don’t think it’s possible to read Jazz Baby by Lisa Wheeler and R. Gregory Christie  aloud without bouncing a bit. This book, which earned the Geisel Honor Award, works on so many levels.  Your Music Smart kids will be pulled into the the rhythm of the rhyme (and no one does rhyme as well as Lisa Wheeler).  Your Body Smart kids can snap or tap along as you read. With all the “doo-wop-doo”s and “bop-bop-bop”s, this is a perfect springboard to introduce onomatopoeia." - Kristen Remenar

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, by Simms Taback

http://www.simmstaback.com/Simms_Taback_Books_-_There_Was_An_Old_Lady_Who_Swallowed_A_Fly.html

"Everyone knows the song about the old lady who swallowed a fly, a spider, a bird, and even worse, but who's ever seen what's going on inside the old lady's stomach? With his inventive die-cut artwork, Simms Taback, illustrator of The Road Builders gives young readers a rollicking, eye-popping version of the well-loved poem." - Viking Books for Young Readers

If You're Happy and You Know It!, by Jan Ormerod

"Here's a new take on the popular song known to every child. In this version, a collection of animals put their own twist on the words. A new version that stresses individuality and won't fail to amuse every child." - Star Bright Books

If You're Happy and You Know It: Jungle Edition, by James Warhola

"A fun, roar-out-loud jungle version of the favorite kids' song, IF YOU'RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT!

If you're happy and you know it, give a roar!

This jungle version of the classic song IF YOU'RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT! is a real read-along sing-along safari! Get ready to stomp your feet, flap your wings, and scratch your fur!" - Orchard Books

We made ribbon sticks!

We played with musical instruments, and formed a marching band!

Gulp! … Gulp! … Gulp! … BURP!

L is for Leaping Lizards!

L is for Lucky, Lazy, Laugh, Lost, Lug, Language, Loop, Lick, Loose, Life, and Leaping Lizards!

We read:

Llama Llama and the Bully Goat, by Anna Dewdney

"Llama Llama is learning lots of new things at school and making many friends. But when Gilroy Goat starts teasing him and some of their classmates, Llama Llama isn't sure what to do. And then he remembers what his teacher told him—walk away and tell someone. It works! But then Llama Llama feels badly. Can he and Gilroy try to be friends again?

Taking on a difficult but important part of children's lives, Anna Dewdney gives readers a way to experience and discuss bullying in a safe and comforting way." - llamallamabooks

We did some lizard stretches!

We read:

Nobody Laughs at a Lion, by Paul Bright

""You can see why I'm King of the Jungle," said Big Lion. "It's because I'm the best." But what is he best at? He quickly discovers that the jungle is full of talented animals. Cheetah, monkey, snake, and elephant giggle as Big Lion tries and fails to run, climb, creep, and crash through the forest. Energetic and expressive illustrations will entertain young readers until the very end when Big Lion finds out what he does best. And then, Nobody Laughs at a Lion!" - Good Books

We sang: London Bridge is Falling Down

London Bridge is falling down,
Falling down,
Falling down.
London Bridge is falling down,
My fair lady.

Everyone got a chance to be part of the bridge; as we ended the song, the bridge came down, and as they got caught, the children swapped places being the bridge.

We read:

Llama Llama Home With Mama, by Anna Dewdney

"Ah-choo! Uh-oh, Llama Llama's nose is feeling tickly, his throat is feeling scratchy, and his head is feeling stuffy. Back to bed, no school today for Llama Llama! Instead, he's home with Mama. By lunchtime, though, he's beginning to feel a tiny bit better. But now someone else has the sneezes . . . Mama! And who will help her feel better? Why, Llama Llama, of course! Anna Dewdney's fun-to-read rhymes are sure to help children and their parents get through those under-the-weather days." - llamallamabooks

For our craft, we made lizards!

Materials: Coloured Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, sticky-back googly eyes, and scissors. We cut the pipe cleaner to size for arms/legs/tails, wrapped them around the body (sticks), and twisted them to make funny shapes. We added sticky-back googly eyes in varying sizes, numbers, and arrangements.

Next week, we will explore the magical world of music!
