Saturdays in October we'll be starting a Lap-Sit program for children 0-3. Program runs Saturdays from 10:15 - 10:45 am. Children can come with Mommy or Daddy to experience nursery rhymes, fairy tales, songs, and puppet stories. This program is free, registration required - space is limited!

Local photographer Rob Hamill will be displaying his art in the library October 5-7. Rob's pieces will all be for sale, so if you're looking to add to your collection, come by the library and check out his exhibit!

October 13th is Pirate Day! Join us from 1-2 pm for high-seas adventures! Dress like a pirate, talk like a pirate, and win some pirate treasure! This children's program is free, registration required - space is limited!

On October 27th, the Sylvan Lake Library will be hosting Sylvan Lake's first Zombie Walk. Come to the library at 3:30 to prepare for this event - we'll be roaming around the lake shore, showing off our best zombie walks, limps, snarls, and more! But watch out - there will be a Zombie Annihilation Squad poised to take out a few zombies along the way! Prizes will be given out at the end of the event, so follow us back to the library at the end of the walk! The Zombie Walk should end around 5:30 pm.

Quite a busy month!

More and more children are winning prizes by reading! Congratulations to Jacob for bringing back his reading sheet, and getting a cute little stuffed animal!

The 1000 Books For Kindergarten program welcomes Koen, who recently signed up! Happy reading!

Our last Star Reader of the Week was Raiden. This week's Star Reader is Adam! Congratulations!

Our last Book of the Week was "Baby Beluga", a beloved sing-along book. Our eighteenth Book of the Week is "The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians", by Carla Morris.

"Every day after school Melvin goes to the library. Everything has its place in the library and Melvin likes it that way. And his favorite people—Marge, Betty, and Leola—are always in their places, behind the reference desk.

When something interests Melvin, his librarian friends help him find lots and lots of books on the subject. When he collects creepy bugs in a jar, they help him identify, classify, and catalog the insects. When he is cast as the Enormous Eggplant in the school play, Betty reads aloud from Organic Gardening to help him find his motivation. As the years pass, Melvin can always find the answers to his questions—and a lot of fun—in the library. Then one day he goes off to college to learn new things and read new books. Will he leave the library and his friends
behind forever?"

Stay tuned for more children's events, our next Book of the Week, and Star Reader. Keep up the good reading!

1000 Books Week Seventeen

Things are going really well in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Congratulations to Linaya for bringing back her next reading sheet - she's up to 150 books now!

This week's "Star Reader" is Raiden!

Last week's Book of the Week was "This Little Piggy's Book of Manners", a charming tale about those who do good.

Our seventeenth Book of the Week is "Baby Beluga", song by Raffi, illustrated by Ashley Wolff.

"The song about this small, white whale has as its hero probably the best loved of all Raffi's creations. Children who are learning about the interdependence of all life on Earth, and of the crucial importance of preserving the fragile environment, will get a first, cheerful lesson about the natural world by becoming acquainted with enchanting Baby Beluga, swimming wild and free with his mother in the deep blue sea. He and his friends are somewhat anthropomorphic, in the interests of cuddliness, but this does the message no harm . The illustrations are a joy to behold, and the song has a rhythm and rhyme that make it easy to remember and sing."

If your child is between the ages of 0 and 3, we are starting a Lap-Sit program in October. The program will run every Saturday from 10:15 - 10:45 am. We will provide a combination of songs, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and puppet stories. Register now for this free program, as spaces are limited.

Also, we will have a guest reader in the library on Mondays at 4:00. Bring your child to the Children's area for drop-in story time with Grandma Generous.

Stay tuned for our next Star Reader and Book of the Week, as well as more information about the exciting new children's programs we're offering!

1000 Books Week Sixteen

Anyone else feel that familiar chill in the air this morning? Fall is definitely upon us!

The library is busy once more with children and parents coming to morning story time! We missed you!

Last week's Star Reader was Huston - a very smiley guy!

Huston just got his prize and picture taken to display in the library on Thursday, so we'll let him stay up for this week. We'll draw for the next Star Reader on Friday.

Our last Book of the Week was "The Cow Loves Cookies", a silly story about a certain cow's favorite treat! After all, who doesn't love cookies?!

Our sixteenth Book of the Week is "This Little Piggy's Book of Manners", by Kathryn Madeline Allen.

"This little piggy said 'please' and 'thank you.'
This little piggy did not.

This little piggy closed his mouth while he ate.
This little piggy forgot.

Oops!

Just like little piggies, it's easy for young children to sometimes forget their manners. Here's a jaunty picture book that will make the learning experience all the more fun."

Stay tuned for our next Book of the Week, and Star Reader. And remember, the more you read, the more you learn!

Author Reading at the Library

If you were down at the lake today instead of the library, you missed out on a great Author Reading! Shawna Moore, local author, read a selection from her first book, "House of Dreams".

Here's a description of her novel:

Fifteen year old Jesse Fuller is forced to move from the big city into an old, abandoned house in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere. To top it off, she is forced to share a room with her little brother! The first night, Jesse finds her sleep disturbed by strange and vivid dreams. She soon learns from the other kids in her class that the house she now lives in has a mysterious past.

First driven by curiosity, Jesse starts to dig deeper into its history, to understand why she is plagued by these dreams, and learns that her own family story may be tied up in it. Before long she finds herself on a desperate quest for a talisman that she believes will help her escape the dreams and forget what she knows about the house.

Shawna started working on this book 9 years ago, and recently got to see her dream of publishing come true. We're happy she chose to share her story with us!

Two lucky kids went home with a free, SIGNED copy of her book today. I even bought one for myself!

We hope to have Shawna back again to read a selection of her book again soon! Look for our copy in the library soon!

1000 Books Week Fifteen

The first week of school is behind us! No more lazying about the house, sleeping in until noon, going down to the lake whenever we feel like it! (Though that sounds pretty good, doesn't it?)

Last week's Star Reader was Easton - here he is getting his goodies!

This week's Star Reader is Huston.

If you haven't already registered in this exciting program, do so now! Children win prizes for reading!

Last week's Book of the Week was "Z is for Moose", by Kelly Bingham, a cute story about a Moose who doesn't want to be ignored!

Our fifteenth Book of the Week is "The Cow Loves Cookies", by Karma Wilson.

"The horse loves hay, the chickens need feed, the geese munch on corn, the hogs devour slop, the dog eats treats, but THE COW LOVES COOKIES?
A twist on the ordinary barnyard picture book, the latest read-aloud from bestselling author Karma Wilson is a clever entry into an curious incident on the farm. As the farmer makes his rounds each day, most of the animals chew on the foods a young reader would expect. But when it's time to feed the cow, she feasts on a special treat! Wilson's signature style and Marcellus Hall's spirited watercolors will delight children on and off the farm--because when it comes down to it, who doesn't love milk and cookies?"
Stay turned for next week's Book of the Week and Star Reader! Keep up the good reading!

Summer is Wrapping Up, Fall is Here

School has started and we are all getting back into a regular routine.  Storytime and GASP are starting back up!

Storytime for 2's and 3's starts on September 11.  You can choose from a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday class. They start at 10:15 and run until 11. Children are attended by parents or caregivers. We read stories, tell fingerplays and rhymes and make a craft.  Call to register. The session runs for 6 weeks.

Fun for 4's and 5's starts on September 14. It runs Fridays at 1:15 until 2pm. Children need not have their parent or caregiver present but they do need to be in the building. We read stories, tell fingerplays and rhymes, and make crafts. Call to register. The session runs for 6 weeks.

GASP is a Great After School Program for children 7-12 years old. It runs on Thursdays from 4-5pm. Children play games, do experiments, make art and have a snack.

Teens in the Library starts on September 17th from 5:30-8pm. It runs monthly on the third Monday of the month. It is for teens 13-18 years old. This month they are reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman (or any other fantasy novel) and then watching the movie.
Teens will also be preparing for the Zombie Walk in October.

1000 Books Week Fourteen

School bells are ringing. Summer break is behind us. The days are getting shorter and shorter. The air is getting crisper. Soon the leaves will start to change, birds will migrate south. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and then Christmas!

Anyone else wondering where the time went?

More kids are winning prizes by reading books! Congratulations to Linaya, Ryanne, and Penelope! Great reading! Keep up the awesome work!

Last week's Book of the Week was "The Castle", by Claude Millet, a fun story about the ins and outs of medieval castles.

Our Fourteenth Book of the Week is "Z is for Moose", by Kelly Bingham.

"Z is for Zebra.
Zebra is absolutely certain he’ll be able to direct everyone to appear on the correct page, at the appropriate time, without any mishaps, unnecessary drama, or hurt
feelings. It’s the ABCs, for goodness’ sake. How difficult can it be?
Oh, dear.
Zebra forgot about moose."

And finally, we have our first Star Reader of the Week! Congratulations to Easton for being a Star Reader!
