Mittens

Theme Mittens
Age 2’s and 3’s, 4’s and 5’s
Duration 45 minutes

2. Read first story “The Mitten

3. Poem: 10 Little Mittens Hanging on the Line
10 little mittens hanging on the line... one went away, and then there were nine
9 little mittens near the gate... one went away, and then there were eight.
8 little mittens blowing near heaven... one flew off, and then there were seven.
7 little mittens hanging near the sticks... one fell off and there were six.
6 little mittens by the old beehive... one came off, and then there were five.
5 little mittens very near the door... one went away, and then there were four.
4 little mitten hanging from a tree... one went away, and then there were three.
3 didn't know what to do... one went away, and then there were two.
2 little mittens drying in the sun... one went away...and then there was one.
1 little mitten didn't want to be alone... He went a way, and then there were none.

4. Read second story “One Little Lamb”, “Three Little Kittens”, "One Mitten" or “The Missing Mittens Mystery

6. Craft: Mitten and Animals from “The Mitten”
Wallpaper, stapler, animal sheet, markers, scissorsDirections:
Trace out mitten shape on 2 pieces of wallpaper and cut out. Staple closed. Colour and cut out animals and add to the mitten. Decorate the mitten if desired.

Penguins

Penguins

2. Read first story "Without You", "Lost and Found", "Little Penguin" or "Cinderella Penguin"

3. Poem: SIX LITTLE PENGUINS

Six little penguins off an iceberg did dive,
One bumped his beak, then there were five.
Five little penguins swam the ocean floor,
One saw a whale, then there were four.
Four little penguins spun around, whee-ee!
One spun off, then there were three!
Three little penguins, with nothing to do,
One went fishing, then there were two.
Two little penguins, having lots of fun,
One fell of, then there was one.
One little penguin, when the day was done,
Went home to sleep, then there were none.

3. Read second story "Where is Home, Little Pip?", "Cuddly Dudley" or "365 Penguins"

4. In the Land of Ice and Snow--fingerplay

In the land of ice and snow (shiver and say “brrr!” )
Where the freezing, cold winds blow (blow)
Lives a bird who’s quite a sight (make circles with fingers and put to eyes like binoculars)
With his suit of black and white. (run hands along side of body, then tummy)
He can swim, but he can’t fly. (swim and shake head “yes”, fly and shake head “no”)
The penguin is a funny guy!

5. Craft: Oreo Penguin Snack
Oreo cookie, Candy Corn, chocolate chip
Directions:
Divide the Oreo into two pieces. (An adult can do this easily without breaking the cookies by using a sharp knife.)
Break or cut (with serrated knife) the half that does not have the icing on it.
Push the flat part of the chocolate chip into the frosting of the Oreo cookie. This is the head.
Take the two halves of the other part of the cookie and place on icing with curved sides facing the center. These are the wings.
Use two pieces of candy corn to make the feet.

6. Colouring sheet of penguin.
Use markers to decorate penguin.

Family Literacy Day

Stories, crafts and games that celebrate the joy of reading will be the highlights of Family Literacy Day on January 27th from 1-2:30 pm.
Pick up your Read With Your Family reading log this week (Jan19-23) and record your family's reading for a chance to win a great family prize on Tuesday January 27th.
Family Literacy Day is open to everyone, Registration is free.
This fun family event is sponsored in part by the Henday Association for Lifelong Learning. Family Literacy Day promotes the importance of reading and learning together as a family all year round.

Snowmen Theme

3. Poem: The Chubby Snowman


A chubby little snowman
Had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny,
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny,
Looking for his lunch,
Ate that snowman's carrot
Nibble, nibble, crunch

Song: I'm a Friendly Snowman (Tune: "I'm a Little Teapot")


I'm a friendly snowman big and fat (stretch arms out at sides)
Here is my tummy and here is my hat (point to tummy and then top of head)
I'm a happy fellow, here's my nose (Smile and then point to nose)
I'm all snow from my head to my toes (point to head and then to toes)
I have two bright eyes so I can see (Point to eyes)
All the snow falling down on me (flutter fingers downward)
When the weather's cold I'm strong and tall (stand up tall)
But when it's warm I get very small. (crouch down low)

I made myself a snow ball as perfect as could be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet and let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas and a pillow for its head.
Then, last night it ran away.But first -- it wet the bed.

6. Craft: Snowmen
Make snowmen with play dough, small sticks, toothpicks, beads and yarn.

Journal Making

Don't be a Wimp!!

We are celebrating the release of a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is titled Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Last Straw.

To celebrate we are making journals NOT diaries.

We will be making our own journals and adding some crazy comics, "would you rathers", lists and stuff.

Bring your imagination.

Saturday, January 17th is the day, from 1-2pm in the library.

FREE, give us a call to register.

New sessions of Storytime are Starting!



New sessions are starting this week January 13th.
There are classes for the 2 and 3 year olds on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:15-11:00. Call to register. Last I looked there was room in all the classes but Tuesday looked the busiest.
Classes for the 4 and 5 year olds are on Fridays from 1:15-2pm.
