Frogs

Frogs
Age                  2’s and 3’s, 4’s and 5’s

1.            Storytime – Welcome Song
Storytime is starting, starting, starting.
Storytime is starting, come and listen to me.

2.            Read first story The Big Wide-Mouthed Frog, Frog went a-courtin', Beware of the Frog, or Fish is Fish

3.            Flannel Story: 5 Green and Speckled Frogs
5 green and speckled frogs  Sat on a hollow log
Eating some most delicious bugs - yum, yum
One jumped into the pool Where it was nice and cool
Now there are 4 green, speckled frogs - glub, glub

4 green and speckled frogs... etc
3 green and speckled frogs... etc
2 green and speckled frogs... etc
1 green and speckled frog  Sat on a hollow log
Eating some most delicious bugs - yum, yum
He jumped into the pool Where it was nice and cool
Now there are no green, speckled frogs - glub, glub!

4.                            Read second story The Frog in the Bog, One Frog Sang, Excuse Me!, Froggy Eats Out or The Mysterious Tadpole.

5.            Fingerplay: Five Frisky Frogs
Five little frisky frogs hopping on the shore. (Hold up five fingers. hop.)
One hopped into the pond- SPLASH! (Call “splash” loudly throw hands out and up.)
So then there were just four.

Four little frisky frogs climbing up a tree. (Hold up four fingers. Climb.)
One fell into the grass - BOOM! (Fall and call “boom” loudly.)
So then there were just three.

Three little frisky frogs bathing in the dew. (Hold up 3 fingers. Wash face and body.)
One caught a sneezy cold - AHHCHOO! (Cover nose and sneeze loudly.)
So then there were just two.

Two little frisky frogs sleeping in the sun. (Hold up two fingers and sleep.)
One slept the day away - SNORE! (Snore loudly.)
So then there was just one.

One little frisky frog sitting on a stone. (Hold up 1 finger, lean chin on hand and look sad.)
Let’s call his four friends back - YOO - HOO! (Cup hands around mouth.)
So he won’t be all alone. (Hold up five fingers and smile)

6.            Craft:   Frog on a Lily pad

Frog shape, lily pad shape, tissue paper, googly eyes, glue, markers
Cut out shapes, glue green tissue paper pieces onto lily pad. Glue frog shape onto the lily pad.

Fly away Jack  [Hide right hand behind back.] 
Fly away Jill  [Hide left hand behind back.] 
Come back Jack  [Bring right hand back.] 
Come back Jill. [Bring left hand back.]

4.             Read second story Chicken Little, Grumpy Bird, Wow! said the Owl or The Ugly Duckling


5.   Finger Play: Feathered Birds
Five feathered birds sitting on the door;
One flew away and then there were four.
Four feathered birds singing in the tree,
One flew away and then there were three.
Three feathered birds looking at you,
One flew away and then there were two.
Two feathered birds sitting in the sun,
One flew away and then there was one.
One feathered bird looking like a hero,
He flew away and now there are zero!

6.   Crafts: Robin
Materials: circle shapes from brown construction paper folded in half, red crepe paper, strips of paper, orange squares, scissors, glue.

Wad up squares of crepe paper into balls, glue balls onto breast area of the folded circle. Draw on eye. Glue on orange beak.

Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet eating her curds and whey.
Along came a spider and sat down beside her. And frightened Miss Muffet away!

Baby Bumblebee
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee ,Won't my mommy be so proud of me,[Cup hands together as if holding bee.]
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee, Ouch! It stung me! [Shake hands as if just stung.]
I'm squishing up the baby bumblebee, Won't my mommy be so proud of me, ['Squish' bee between palms of hands.]
I'm squishing up a baby bumblebee, Ooh! It's yucky! [Open up hands to look at 'mess'.]
I'm wiping off the baby bumblebee, Won't my mommy be so proud of me, [Wipe hands off on shirt.]
I'm wiping off the baby bumblebee, Now my mommy won't be mad at me! [Hold hands up to show they are clean.]

ONE One fly in the web, Oh me, oh my.
The web begins to tremble, In comes another fly!
How many flies? TWO

The web begins to tremble, In comes another fly!

Four flies in the web, Oh me, oh my.
The web begins to tremble, In comes another fly!

Five flies in the web, Oh me, oh my.
The spider eats them one by one.

How many flies? NONE
That’s ZERO flies!

6.   Crafts: Bug
Materials: circle shapes from construction paper, various shapes and colours of construction paper, markers, scissors, glue.
Choose colour of bug, add legs, antennae and decorate.

This is mama, kind and dear. (Point to thumb.)

This is baby, sweet and small. (Point to little finger.)
These are the family one and all! (Wiggle all fingers.) 

6.   Crafts: Mom’s Flower and Card
Materials: photocopies of flowers, straws, scissors, butterflies pics, card stock and stickers.

Cut out shapes, poke holes in middle. Insert straw through the middle of 2 flowers. Score top edge of straw to make a stamen. Wrap butterfly around straw.
Fold card stock card, decorate with stickers.
