Boredom Busters: Soak Up the Sun

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Soak Up the Sun!

First and foremost, put sunscreen on! Our weather in Alberta can change on a dime, so slather on that sunscreen and be ready for whatever the day has in store for you!

With Phase One of re-opening kicking off, everyone is chomping at the bit to get outside and rediscover the world around them! Let's look at some fun and safe outdoor activities for a sunny day!

Hula Hoop Contest: grab a friend (from 2 meters away), grab a hoop, and see who can hula the longest! Make it a travelling contest, and see who can hula hoop the furthest! Are you an expert hula hooper? Make a video or photo series of your epic skills, and tag us on social media (links at the end of the blog).

Gardening: while not as fun as a hula hoop contest, now is a great time to get some gardening in! Whether you have a deck planter for some herbs, have a full garden bed, or just want to plan some beans in styrofoam cups - get your garden on! The bees will thank you!

Sylvan Lake Photo Walk: our online photo exhibit is still going! While you're out and about in this glorious weather, snap some pictures of the world around you, post them to your social media and/or tag us in them along with the hashtag #SylvanLakePhotoWalk - to enter them into our weekly Best of Sylvan Lake Photo Walk contest, and for a chance to be included in our in-house exhibit when the Library re-opens, send your photos to corrie.brown@prl.ab.ca then check our website for the weekly spotlight. Kite Flying: the wind off the lake makes for some great kite flying. Be mindful of social distancing while out and about, and see how high you can fly your kite. Test out some trick moves while you're at it!

Outdoor Yoga: now's a great time to soak up the sun while doing some relaxing yoga. Get limbered up, then check out our new weekly Family Yoga Story Time - Thursdays at 10:00 am via Zoom, with special instructor Katie Paquin! Call 403-887-2130, message the library via Facebook, or email corrie.brown@prl.ab.ca to sign up for these free virtual programs!

Popsicle Making: the best part of a sunny day is the cool down. Store bought popsicles are great, but you can make your own with some delicious flavours! Check them out, and enjoy the cool refreshment on a sunny afternoon!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family excited to soak up the sun!
