Boredom Busters: Outdoor Sensory Play

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Outdoor Sensory Play!

Build a Garden: https://inspirationlaboratories.com/recycled-container-gardening-with-kids/

There are so many great and creative ways to start a garden, and we are having beautiful weather lately that just makes you want to get outside and get messy!  This Upcycled Soda Bottle Planter is great for wheat grass! What other herbs could you grow in this kind of planter?

While you're enjoying your gardening fun, check out this Dirt Sensory Bin!

Bubble Wrap Body Slam Painting: https://www.thechaosandtheclutter.com/archives/bubble-paint-body-slam

It's exactly as it sounds. If you are brave enough to try this sensory art project, please take pictures. Or videos. Or both.

Leaf Painting: https://www.artbarblog.com/leaf-painting-with-kids/

While you're cleaning up your yard for spring, save some of those leaves for an awesome art project. Don't have leaves in your yard? Go on a nature walk and collect some great ones. Then bring them on home and try out different painting methods on them!

Water Blob: https://theresjustonemommy.com/having-fun-with-a-water-blob/

This one sounds weird, but if you have some plastic sheeting, duct tape, and a hose, then this will be amazing. You'll definitely want a big space outside for this project. Have the kids cut out some foam fish and boats to put inside the water blob. Lay them out, tape the edges, and fill 'er up! Then let the kids run around on the cool plastic and try to trap/stomp the fish! An afternoon well spent!

Give this tutorial a watch if you want to make a really big blog - she recommends ironing the edges of your plastic sheeting for a perfect seal!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in outdoor sensory play!
