Boredom Busters: Rainy Day Games

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Rainy Day Games!

Indoor Treasure Hunt: https://www.thespruce.com/indoor-treasure-hunt-for-children-1695332

This is a great way to re-imagine your surroundings. Make a game of creating mysterious and clever ways of renaming every day objects around your house. Add a little touch of nostalgia in the mix by including some family history in the hunt. This week's Talk About It Tuesday featured some blasts from the Library staff's past! What kind of artifacts do you have lying around?

Cardboard Tube Marble Run: https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/cardboard-tube-marble-run-building-activity-for-kids/

All you need for this activity is some empty tubes, painters tape, and a few marbles! Find an open section of wall if you can, and get started planning your structure. Bonus points if you can devise a way for the marble(s) to take different paths! The only limit is your creativity! What a great use for those toilet paper tubes!

Yarn Obstacle Course: http://totschool.shannons.org/laser-obstacle-course-with-yarn/

Grab your yarn, grab your tape, and plan the perfect maze of laser yarn! Let the kids help design the maze, and see who can get through it the fastest!

Balloon Badminton: https://handsonaswegrow.com/balloon-badminton/

This is a great indoor game, especially if you have an open space in a basement or hallway. With some paper plates and popsicle sticks/plastic forks, you can create a simple DIY racket. Then blow up a balloon and let the games begin! Try not to let it touch the floor!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in some rainy day games!

If your kids loved these activities, feel free to send us feedback or pictures on any of our social media platforms, linked below.
