Boredom Busters: All About Birds

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is All About Birds!

Bird Facts: https://www.scienceforkidsclub.com/bird-facts.html

Learn some amazing bird facts, such as:

- Birds have hollow bones, which helps them fly
- Hummingbirds are just 2 inches in length
- Chickens are thought to be the closest living thing to a relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Check out more fun facts about birds here!

Birdwatching: https://www.cbc.ca/parents/play/view/easy-birdwatching-with-kids

Birdwatching is a wonderful way for kids to explore the word around them while building empathy for creatures big and small. Check out the Sylvan Lake Natural Area for access to birdwatching locations and notable species to look for.

Want to do some birdwatching in our own back yard? Build a few birdfeeders, place them away from windows and high enough that cats can't reach them. Keep in mind that gelatin can be difficult for birds to digest, so whenever possible use a safer alternative, such as peanut butter or honey. Want to build your own Nestbox? Check out Ellis Bird Farm!

Local photographer Randy Fiedler snapped this picture of a Merlin feeding in a tree!
