Boredom Busters: Helping Community Helpers

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Helping Community Helpers!

There's always time to celebrate our community helpers! From the Fire Department, to the RCMP, to nurses and doctors. Volunteers at the Food Bank, Community Partners, FCSS, the Library, and all of the teachers who help our children learn and grow.

For today's Boredom Busters, let's look at some ways that we can give back to them!

Thank You Cards & Treats: What better way to celebrate National Nursing Week than to write a thank you letter to a nurse! Compose a family video and share it with the hashtag #ThankANurse.

Do you have a first responder or essential worker in your life? Reach out and thank them for their work. Most of them are working long hours in stressful situations. Pull out the recipe book, and choose a special treat that you can make to show them how much you appreciate them. From cakes to casseroles, their tired bodies and hungry bellies will thank you right back!

Donations: Local organizations do amazing work to help our community. The Sylvan Lake Food Bank is volunteer run, and is always in need of donations: https://www.sylvanlakenews.com/news/sylvan-lake-food-bank-low-on-key-essentials/

Give what you can, when you can, even if it's just a can of soup. If you like to sew, check out Scrub Bags for Alberta Health Care Workers. If you have the material and the time, you could combine this donation with a thank you note for nurses!

Community Kindness: If you've seen the Ninja craze sweeping the Province, you might be itching to get involved. From treats and toys, to kind messages and colouring pages. There are many ways to spread kindness and smiles right now. Seize the opportunity!

Check out how others are spreading #CovidKindness in their communities. From walk-by joke stands to powerful sidewalk chalk art, how can you show your community spirit?

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family thinking about ways to help our Community Helpers!
