Boredom Busters: The Art of Math

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is The Art of Math!

Colour Wheel Clock: https://craftwhack.com/color-wheel-for-kids/

This is the perfect project to upcycle an old clock, or if you're really into it, create one from scratch. If you don't have all the materials for that, you can still do the basic principles of this project with a non-functioning clock, and still have a really nice art piece.

This project will teach your kids how to find the radius of a circle, the precision of exact measurements, and all about tertiary colours! Give it a try!

Pi Skyline: https://www.whatdowedoallday.com/math-art-for-kids-pi

You do not need to be a math expert to create this cool piece of art. All you need is graph paper, markers, and a printout of pi. Create your skyline with each number of pie, and then add to the mathematical art piece with some watercolour paint!

Felted Fractions: https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/50959/art-math-inspired-klee

A twist on building blocks! Cut out pieces of felt or paper into shapes that represent different fractions, then use the pieces to create a masterpiece! Let the kids build their picture however they like, or create challenges to build certain structures. See if they can re-align all the pieces. Without realizing they're doing "math", they are learning the basic principles of geometry and how shapes and area interact!

Compass Painting: http://www.housingaforest.com/compass-painting/

For this project, you will need a compass, paint brush (with a skinny handle), masking tape, watercolour paint, and paper. The rest is up to your creativity! Create different coloured circles and waves, adjust the compass to create bigger or smaller circles! You won't even realize you're building math skills!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in celebrating the art of math!
