Boredom Busters: Yummy and Healthy

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Yummy and Healthy!

As we are spending more time at home, it is so important to plan ahead when it comes to meals and snacks. This is a great opportunity to involve the kids in meal preparation! Younger kids can gather ingredients, measure, wash vegetables, etc. Older kids can pee and chop, grate cheese, open canned items, etc. Everyone can be involved! Check out some of these ideas to have some yummy, healthy, and fun family time!

Food Network created a section on their website for Cooking with Kids, which shows a selection of recipes that kids - with a little supervision - can make at home. Let the kids pick which day of they week they want to be in charge of the meals - they will be so proud!

For more inspiration, check out Baking Class, by Deanna F. Cook and Salsa, by Jorge Argueta and Duncan Tonatiuh.

Get in touch with friends or family and organize an online cooking club! Each week everyone can try a new recipe and share it. Document the process with pictures, videos - the fun is limitless!

Check out Passion for Health from Alberta Health Services for recipes, healthy eating, food safety, and more! Try making your own Rainbow Pasta, using food colouring to dye the noodles, or boil them naturally with spinach, beet, or carrot juice! For dessert, try this edible slime!

Invite your kids to be Mini Chef stars! Let them plan (or help plan) the treats for your Canada Day celebration at home. How about some Maple Leaf cookies?

Check out Kid Food Nation for activities for kids in the kitchen, instructional videos, online games, and a selection of Canadian classic recipes!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in some yummy and healthy food projects!

If your kids loved these activities, feel free to send us feedback or pictures on any of our social media platforms, linked below.
