Boredom Busters: Being Neighbourly

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Being Neighbourly!

Today it is more important than ever to be a good neighbour, and to encourage others to do the same. For today's blog, let's look at some ways that we can encourage our children - and ourselves - to be good neighbours.

Share a Positive Message: use sidewalk chalk to paint a positive or kind message on the sidewalk in front of your neighbours' houses. Write them a note and leave it in their mailbox or taped to their door.

Helping the Elderly: reach out to the elderly people in your neighbourhood and find out if there are any chores you can help them with. Maybe they just need a friend to talk to. Be mindful of physical distancing, as the elderly are our most vulnerable.

Embrace Positive Influences: there are some wonderful testaments to good neighbours out there. Have a look at The Good Neighbor: the Life and Work of Fred Rogers or Better Together, by Nikki Tate.

Baking: who doesn't love baking? Find out if your neighbours have any allergies, then bake them a favourite dessert or treat! The world could use more things made and shared with love. Check out Soup Night, by Maggie Stuckey.

Clean Up the Neighborhood: grab a garbage bag and start cleaning. We're all responsible for keeping our communities clean, and the best way to do that is to pitch in and do the dirty work. Organizing a group clean up can seem daunting with social and physical distancing, but it can be done.

Host a Virtual Game Night: in person/group events are difficult right now, but this is a perfect time to get together as a group without having to actually "get together". Communicate with your neighbours about creating a virtual game night. Charades or Pictionary are great games to play over Zoom!

Reflection: we can't all be perfect all the time. Sometimes we make mistakes or we act rashly. Check out some of these tips for teaching your children to be good neighbours, and see what areas you can improve on as well. Remember, being a good neighbour isn't only limited to your street or your community. We all must do our part to bring our community together.

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in being neighbourly!
