Boredom Busters: Smell the Roses

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Smell the Roses!

With May behind us and online school quickly coming to and end, we're definitely getting eager for things to "go go go!". As we start to transition back into the hustle and bustle of life, it's important to hold onto those moments of stopping and smelling the roses.

Take some time to try some of these things:

Everyone can benefit from the calming techniques meditation teaches. Listen to Just Breathe, by Mallika Chopra on cloudLibrary, or follow along with the video below.

Flowers are starting to bloom as spring turns into summer. While the weather can seem to turn on a dime, take advantage of those sunny days to find some flowers around you. Be mindful of plant collection guidelines, but don't be shy about exploring areas where wildflowers grow. Find some new ones, and take the opportunity to snap a picture for the Sylvan Lake Photo Walk! The photo below was taken by Sherry Fifield.

We can't preach this one enough, but take the time to read with your children. cloudLibrary has a growing collection of children's books, like Sidewalk Flowers by JonArno Lawson, or An ABC of Flowers by Jutta Hilpuesch. For longer books or books for older children, check out the Warriors books by Erin Hunter, or Story Boat by Kyo Maclear. Read them together, and discuss them as a family while you're reading or after you're finished. Watch the library's website for upcoming events like Bring Your Own Book Club to share what you've been reading together!

Painting is a wonderfully relaxing activity. Grab some paper or cardboard or canvas, some acrylic or watercolour paint, and let your creativity paint a field of beautiful flowers.

When you're done painting flowers, check out Stone Painting for Kids by F. Sehnaz Bac

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in stopping to smell the roses!

If your kids loved these activities, feel free to send us feedback or pictures on any of our social media platforms, linked below.
