Boredom Busters: Dance Like No One's Watching

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Dance Like No One's Watching!

From fads to classics, learning to dance is a time-honoured tradition, made all the more fun and embarrassing when someone pulls out their camera to record it. Today's let's pretend there are no cameras - or maybe ham it up for some - and learn some cool new (and not so new) dance moves!

Who doesn't know how to do the Macarena, or the YMCA? If you don't (or you kids haven't had the opportunity to learn yet), now's a great time to teach them! Check out some of these other fad dances, like the Cha Cha Slide or Gangnam Style!

Want to know a silly secret about your library staff? We went to a dinner theatre for a Christmas party when Gangnam Style was popular, and some of us pretended to do the Gangnam Style dance (quietly while sitting, so as not to disrupt the show), and the table ended up collapsing. Very loudly.

Dance like an animal, freeze dance, Simon Says Dance ... there are so many fun and silly ways to get dancing and grooving around. Have everyone take turns being "Simon" and choosing a silly dance move or inventing their own! The laughs - and moves - are limitless! Try this Kids Exercise Song incorporating parts of the body! ↓

Dance for a cause! Even though we can't dance together right now, try hosting a virtual dance-a-thon! Invite your friends and family, and invite them to invite theirs, and so on and so on. Start a rocking movement to change the world, one beat at a time!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day, and get your family engaged in dancing like no one's watching!

If your kids loved these activities, feel free to send us feedback or pictures on any of our social media platforms, linked below.
