TD Summer Reading Club Week 6: Ages 9-12

Today we discussed the ocean! At the very beginning I asked
everyone to name all the different animals they could think of that lived in the ocean. They said: starfish, shark, jellyfish octopus and so much more! We then took turns and said our favorite animal, there were a lot of dauphins and sharks.

For this week we did a bunch of ocean and beach themed games! Here are all the ones we played:

Game: Hot Beach Ball
This is a variation of the game Hot Potato. You will need a beach ball to serve as your “potato.”
Instructions:
1.       Have everyone sit in a circle leaving a bit of space between each person.
2.       Play beach-y music. One suggestion is “Surfin’ Safari” by The Beach Boys, or any Beach Boys song.
3.       While the music is playing the children toss the beach ball around the circle to each other.
4.       Periodically stop the music.
5.       The person who is holding the beach ball when the music has stopped is out and has to stand on the outside of the circle.
6.       The winner is the last person sitting in the circle.

The next game we played was: Pin the Shades on the Sun!
Instructions: A summer version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey!
-Print out (and if possible, laminate) a picture of a sun with a face
-Print out or draw a pair of sun glasses (for variety, you can do a few different kinds)
-Blind fold one child at a time, spin them, and let them try to place the glasses over the sun’s eyes!

And then we went fishing!
What You'll Need:
6 Paper Clips
A 3' Length of String
A Magnet
A Stick
Our Gone Fishing Cut-Outs
A Pen or Pencil
Scraps of Paper

1.Let everyone take a turn using the pole you made to fish in the box or behind the sofa.
2.When they catch something, identify the fish. (If more than one is caught, throw one back.)
3.If they have caught another type of fish, have him or her pick a funny activity from the pile . Such as:
Make a fish face.
Do 5 leap frogs.
Sing Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
Do 6 jumping jacks.
Pat your head and rub your tummy 3 times.

Then we all swam over to our craft chairs and worked on our turtles! For this craft you need:
A plastic or paper bowl
Cut up pieces of tissue paper
Glue
Googly eyes
Green paper for the head and legs

And then we made our own edible oceans. The supplies you need are:
-small bowl (can be paper or Styrofoam)
-vanilla pudding
- blue food coloring or icing,
-Graham cracker crumbs
-Small party umbrellas (we made our own but you can buy them as well!)
-Gummy bears

We went outside to run around after all the pudding! We played a game of shark tag. One person was the shark and if you got tagged then you turned into seaweed and had to help with the tagging as well! It was a beautiful day outside so it was great to be outdoors!

Next week is the last week of the TD Summer Reading Program! And next week We are Inventors, it will be the time to share all your brilliant ideas and creations.
Don’t forget to bring in your reading notebook next time, with all your readings from the past week so you can enter into the weekly prize. The prize will be drawn Friday at 4:00!
