WEEK 3: Mini PanAm Games
To celebrate the kick off of the PanAm games this week in Toronto, we decided to have our own mini games at the library! To start off the program we had a discussion about all our favourite sports, we all went around and either acted out or said what our favourite sport was. There was swimming, curling, hockey, ringette and a lot of other sports!
The first story we read was:
This was a pretty wordy book but we just flipped through the pictures and read some fun facts about the first Olympic games that were believed to be held as early as the sixth century B.C!
The second book we read was:
This book is absolutely hilarious!! It works best when you read it with two people so I had my volunteer come to the front and act out the skit with me, it was a really funny read.
The last book we read was:
And then on to the games!
The first game we played was a minute to win it challenge called "Sugary Stack Up"
Every child needs one Popsicle stick and 6 sugar cubes.
How to Play:
1.
On "Go!" the player places a popsicle stick in their mouth. Using one
hand, player places one sugar cube on the end of the popsicle stick.
Player continues stacking sugar cubes, one at a time, on top of each
other, to make a tower of 6 cubes. In order to win the challenge, the
tower must stay standing for a full 3 seconds.
2. If at any time the cubes fall, the player can pick them up and start over, but only one hand can be used.
3. Whoever can stack all six cubes and hold the tower for a full 3 seconds first wins!
We played another minute to win it challenge called "Cookie Face" where you had to move one cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hand. This game is especially fun to watch!
The craft for today was make your own flag! Here's how we did it:
Material
- card stock paper
-paintbrush
-paint
Directions
The kids either made up their own flag or made a canadian flag with their handprint!
