TD Summer Reading Club Week 5: Ages 9-12

Week 5: Whodunnit?

For the fifth week of the Summer Reading Club we took out our notebooks, put on our trench coats and became detectives! We talked about all the jobs that detectives have to do in a day and then we moved on to discuss Ninjas and if they were similar or different to spies and detectives!
I asked if anyone would want to be a spy or a ninja for a day and everyone thought that would be the coolest job ever!

After our discussion we headed outside with some chalk and talked about how in movies when someone dies you see and outline of their body in white, so we laid on the sidewalk and we took turns tracing each other’s outlines!

We came back inside and sat down on the carpet, I gave an I spy book to groups of kids and we had a competition to see who could find every object on their page!
You can tell that they are really looking hard!!

After squinting long and hard at the I spy books our eyes needed a break so we played a game of “Two truths, One lie” We went around the circle saying two true things about us and one lie, and the others had to guess which one was the lie. It was really fun and a great way to get to know one another!

Then all the detectives sat down so we could work on our crafts. For this week we made hand print detectives, we painted our hands and then decorated the hand print so it looked like a detective. Here was the final look!

We also painted our hands and put our handprints on a big “Whodunnit” banner and signed it with our Agent names!

After all the crafts, we sat down on the carpet and had some snacks! Some apple slices with mysterious-mustached men on them!

While eating our snack we solved some mysteries together, here are the ones we solved!
Question:There is a man found dead in a circular mansion. The detective interviews the cook, maid, and babysitter. The cook said he couldn’t have done it because he was preparing the meal. The maid said she couldn’t have done it because she was dusting the corners. The babysitter said she couldn’t because she was playing with the children. Who was lying?
Answer: The maid. There are no corners in a circular mansion.

Question: A man is found dead one Saturday morning. He was killed while his wife was sleeping. The wife tells the police all that she knows. She tells them that the cook was cooking breakfast, the maid was cleaning and the butler was getting the mail. The police immediately arrest the person who is responsible. Who is responsible and why?
Answer: The wife because she was sleeping, how could she know that all of that happened!

Question: A man went into a party and drank some of the punch. He then left early. Everyone at the party who drunk the punch subsequently died of poisoning. Why did the man not die?
Answer: The poison from the punch came from the ice cubes. When the man drunk the punch, the ice was fully frozen. Gradually, as the ice cubes melted the poison was released into the punch.

Practice holding your breath for next week because we are going to be diving Down in the Deep Blue Sea we will be talking about all the underwater creatures and discovering the vast ocean!
Don’t forget to bring in your reading notebook next time, with all your readings from the past week so you can enter into the weekly prize. The prize will be drawn Friday at 4:00!

WEEK 5: WHODUNNIT?

For the fifth week of the Summer Reading Club we took out our notebooks, put on our trench coats and became detectives! At the beginning of the program we talked about what a spy does and all the different things that he has to do for a job. Then we talked about if anyone would want to be a spy for a day and everyone thought that would be the coolest job ever!
For the first book that we read, the kids needed to put on their thinking caps because they had to investigate. The book was I spy with my little eye by Edward Gibbs. The kids had to guess what the animal was by little clues such as "I spy with my little eye something that is gray, and who has a very long truck" An elephant!!

Next we played a little eye spy game of our own from objects all around the room. The kids were excellent detectives and spotted the object without any clues!

The second book we read was:

We did a little dancing next as we sung the hokey pokey. We changed up the lyrics so it would fit with our mystery theme!

You put your fingerprints in. you put your fingerprints out.
You put your fingerprints in and you shake them all about.
You do the detective pokey and you turn yourself around.
That’s what the case is all about!

You put your shoeprints in. you put your shoeprints out.

You put your shoeprints in and you shake them all about.
You do the detective pokey and you turn yourself around.
That’s what the case is all about!

You put your smelling sense (nose) in. you put your smelling sense out.
You put your smelling sense in and you shake them all about.
You do the detective pokey and you turn yourself around.
That’s what the case is all about!

You put your hearing sense (ears) in. you put your hearing sense out.

That’s what the case is all about!

The third book we read was:

We played a game called “What doesn’t belong” I gave them four objects and they had to figure out which one didn’t fit into the category. Here are some of the ones we talked about:

EUREKA!

 - Si mon tonton tond ton tonton, ton tonton sera tondu.

TD Summer Reading Club Week 4: Ages 9-12

Week 4: You’re a Star!
For the fourth week it was all about you! We talked about actors, actresses, puppets and of course the theater. At the beginning of the program we discussed the plays or recitals that we had been a part of, and if we ever got nervous while performing!
We also talked about all of the performances and concerts we had been to! A lot of us had been to our brothers or sisters dance recitals or school plays.

We switched things around this week and started with our craft first! We made sock puppets for this week and they needed to dry by the end of it so that we could play with them at the end of the program!

These sock puppets are extremely easy to make! All you need is:
-A clean sock
-googly eyes
-foam for the mouth
-white glue
-yarn for hair

For the rest of the program we played some really fun drama games. Here is what we played:

The Human Knot
1. Stand in a circle with a group of at least four people.
2. Use your right hand to grab the right hand of the person directly across from you.
3. Use your left hand to grab the left hand of the person to the right of the person holding your other hand.
4.Untangle, as a group, back into one open circle, without letting go of hands or dislocating any joints.

Hangman
One player thinks of a word, phrase or sentence and the other tries to guess it by suggesting letters or numbers.

One word story
Players sit in a circle. One person says a single word to begin a story. The person to his left says another word, then the next person says another word, continuing around the circle. The object is to tell a coherent story, one word at a time.

Wizards, Giants, Goblins
1. This is basically a fun group version of “Rock, Paper, Scissors”

2.  Divide the class into two teams.  Tell the teams to go on either side of “the stage”.

3.  Each team secretly decides if they are going to be Wizards, Giants or Goblins.

4.  They line up on two sides of the room facing each other.

5.  The teacher counts 1, 2, 3. On each number the groups takes one step forward.

6.  On “3 they take up the position of the character the group has decided on:
• Wizards: lean forward throwing their arms forward as if casting a spell and say “Shazzam”
• Giants: put both hands above their head, stretching up really tall and say “Ho, ho ho!”
• Goblins: crouch down, put their hands up to their face as if scratching their beards and make a high pitch laugh.

7.  Giants beat Wizards, Wizards beat Goblins and Goblins beat Giants.

8.  The losing team must run back to their side of the room. The winning team try to “tag” as many of the losing team as possible before they get home.

9.  The captives now become part of their captors’ team.

10.  Continue until one team wins.

For the rest of the program we played behind the theater with our sock puppets, and we came up with some wonderful stories!

Bring your magnifying glass and sleuthing skills because next week we will be asking ourselves Whodunit? It will be a week of mystery, detectives and sleuthing!

Don’t forget to bring in your reading notebook next time, with all your readings from the past week so you can enter into the weekly prize. The prize will be drawn Friday at 4:00!

TD Summer Reading Club Week 4: Ages 2-6

WEEK 4: YOU’RE A STAR!

For the fourth week it was all about you! We talked about actors, actresses, puppets and of course the theater. At the beginning of the program we discussed the plays or recitals that we had been a part of, and if we ever got nervous while performing!
We started storytime, as always, with our wiggle and jiggle song and we all sat like a quiet audience while we read the first story:

Everyone loved the thought of giants dancing and we all had a good giggle picturing huge fluffy blue giants doing ballet!

The first activity that we did was discovering emotions. Since actors and
actresses rely a lot on their facial expressions, we decided to see how many expressions we could do. So we were all happy, sad, angry, hungry, tired (this one wasn’t too hard to pretend in the morning class :p) cold, hot and excited!

Our second book was:
The kids were very happy to be able to shout in the library and they took full advantage of it!

We played a quick game of Simon Says to get everyone moving and grooving! To go along with the theme some of the things Simon said was “Simon says do the chicken dance” and “Simon Says act like a puppet on strings”

The last couple books we read were circus themed! We read:

For our craft we made masks! So we could all pretend to be on the stage. All you need for this craft is:

-a template of a mask
-glue
-cut up pieces of tissue paper
-Popsicle stick
-tape
-makers for decorating

Here are some other books to check out!
Bring your magnifying glass and sleuthing skills because next week we will be asking ourselves Whodunit? It will be a week of mystery, detectives and sleuthing!
