TD Summer Reading Week 2: Ages 9-12

March to the Beat of your own drum: Week 2

This week was Music Week! We started off our program with a discussion about all the different instruments that we could think of, we talked about what instruments we played now and what our dream musical instruments would be.

The first activity we did was to go outside and play some rhythms on ice cream pails! We all sat in the beautiful weather in a circle and we played a "Pass the beat" game. It's like a musical game of telephone, one person starts with a simple beat and then we go around the circle adding onto in every time! It was really difficult for the last person it the circle who had to play all the rhythms!

We came inside and to make our craft, which was a shaker/tambourine!
We took two paper plates and decorated them with markers and stickers. Then we stapled them together, filled them with beads and put a ribbon around the outside!

The next activity we did was music note cookie decorating!
Our cookies definitely did not look like this, ours had much MUCH more icing on them :)

The children were all very happy with their new noise makers and their "plenty of icing" cookies and the programming room was nice a loud for this week!
Next week is going to be an Out of This World Adventure! Come join as we explore space, rockets and astronauts.
Don’t forget to bring in your reading notebook next time, with all your readings from the past week so you can enter into the weekly prize. The prize will be drawn Friday at 4:00!

March to the Beat of your own Drum: Week 2
For the second week we explored the land of music! At the beginning of the program we talked about all the different instruments that we could think of, we talked about what instruments we played now and what our dream musical instruments would be. Our discussion moved into all the different sounds that we could make like whistling, clapping and singing.

The first story we read was:
Bantam of the Opera by Mary Jane Auch

We transformed into musicians and played some rhythms with shakers. We played a “repeat after me” game and everyone could definitely become shaker musicians! Every one got a turn to be the leader and we made some beautiful music together!

we also read Zin! Zin! Zin! A violin. While reading we played an activity too, every time a musical instrument was mentioned the kids had to point to a printed off picture of the instrument! By the end of it, the kids knew the instruments so well they were pointing to the image of the instrument before I had even said the name!

After reading Zin! Zin! Zin! We talked about all the different concerts we had been to and which ones we would like to go see. We also discussed everyone’s favorite type of music and their favorite bands!

We went right into our craft which was a shaker/tambourine. We took two paper plates and decorated them with markers and stickers. Then we stapled them together, filled them with beads and put a ribbon around the outside!

Next week is going to be an Out of This World Adventure! Come join as we explore space, rockets and astronauts.

March to the Beat of your own Drum: Week 2

This week we explored the land of music and there was so much to talk about at the beginning of class! Firstly I held up different pictures of instruments and had them guess the name of the instruments-the most difficult one was bassoon and oboe! We then talked about all the other instruments that we knew of and what instruments we would like to learn.

We jumped right into our first book:

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly by  Simms Taback

Everyone thought it was absolutely absurd that she could have swallowed a horse and they all promised that they would never swallow a one!!

To really test their music knowledge we played a game of Name that Tune! I hummed different children’s songs and we all guessed the names of them.  We sang the following songs: Row Row Row your boat, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Happy Birthday and I’m a little teapot.

The second story we read was:

The Seals on the Bus by Lenny Hort.

The next activity we transformed into musicians and played some rhythms with shakers. We played a “repeat after me” game and everyone could definitely become shaker musicians! Every one had a turn to become the leader and some we created some wonderful music together!

The last thing we did before our craft was sing along to the book:

“If you’re happy and you know it” by Anna McQuinn

For the older groups we also read Zin! Zin! Zin! A violin. While reading we played an activity too, every time a musical instrument was mentioned the kids had to point to a printed off picture of the instrument!

Now with everyone very very happy and filled to the brim with musical knowledge we made our musical craft! Which was a Kazoo!

All you need to make this fantastic kazoo is a toilet paper roll, a piece of wax paper, elastic band, paper to decorate and stickers and markers to decorate!

The children were all very happy with their new noise makers and the programming room was nice a loud for this week!

Here are some other musical books you can read!:

EUREKA! Club de lecture d'été: Semaine 2

Semaine 2: La Musique

(grondement, l'aboiement)

Le premier livre qu’on a lu était :

Grrrros Lions! De Robert Munsch et Michael Martchenko

Nous avons joué de la musique avec nos jambes, nos mains et aussi les maracas. On a répété les différents rythmes et chanter nos chansons préférées.

Le deuxième livre qu’on a lu était :

Allez ouste, l’original!

TD Summer Reading Club Week 1: Ages 9-12

OUT IN THE GARDEN: WEEK 1

This week we discovered gardening, so we talked all about the garden we and our parents have and how much work it is to weed it and make sure that it’s a happy healthy garden so that it grows plenty of food so we can eat it!
We started off the day outside (in the blazing 28 degree weather) and we played an energetic game of seed, seed, grow (duck, duck, goose). After a couple rounds we all started to slow down so we came inside and re-energized ourselves with some grape caterpillars.

We worked on our little grass headed men for our craft and then right after we headed outside and planted a tomato plant together!

We are going to continue to water in throughout the summer and hopefully by the end we will be able to enjoy some plump and juicy tomatoes!
We played a very fun game of Simon says and it was very difficult to get all the kids out. They are some very smart cookies!
To end off the program we sat in a circle and made up a story together, each of us saying only one word to create the story! I think the end result was a dinosaur named Bob who lived with his pet sucker- Bob Jr. and they ate cream cheese every day. Interesting!
Next week we will be exploring the land of music! Our theme is March to the beat of your own drum.

Don’t forget to bring in your reading notebook next time, with all your readings from the past week so you can enter into the weekly prize. The prize will be drawn Friday at 4:00!

TD Summer Reading Club Week 1: Ages 7 and 8

WEEK 1: OUT OF THE GARDEN
We had quick discussion about gardens at the beginning: about who has a garden and what it takes for a garden to grow! We talked about how every plant needs water, soil, sun and good attention to keep healthy. We talked about the different things that we can find in a garden like flowers, tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries and other fruit and vegetables. We then read our first story:
Too Many Chickens by Paulette Bourgeois and Bill Slavin

After we read “Too Many Chickens” we discussed about our own class pets. They have taken care of everything from a gerbil to a bearded dragon in their classes!

We also read Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candace Fleming

We then played a game to see if everyone knew their fruit and vegetables, the children all decided that corn is the best vegetable because you can make popcorn from the kernels!

I then challenged them even further in their fruit/vegetable knowledge by giving them a riddle and getting them to guess what I was talking about. Here are the riddles we figured out today in the program!
I’m round red and juicy, too
Chop me up in a salad
Or dump me in your stew,
What am I?

Chop me up and slice me,
But keep a tissue near.
I sometimes get a bit juicy
And can bring on a few tears
What am I?

Orange is my colour,
I stand long and lean.
In the garden you will see
Just my leaves of green.
What am I?

I live in a pod
With so many others.
I think I was born
With one hundred brothers
What am I?

I have eyes for perfection
To give you my very best.
Baked, mashed, or French fried,
I’ll pass any test.
What am I?

My friends call me trees,
Now that’s a funny name,
Though I am dark, dark, green
With stalks just the same.
What am I?

The last story we read was Seven Hungry Babies by Candace Fleming:

We moved into our activity of our grass headed man! We used plastic cups, googly-eyes and pipe cleaners for the face and we decorated our cups with stickers and foam cut outs! We then put soil and grass seeds in the cup and gave them a light sprinkle of water.

If you are looking for some other great gardening books to read, here are some suggestions!

Next week we will be exploring the land of music! Our theme is March to the beat of your own drum.

Don’t forget to bring in your reading notebook next time, with all your readings from the past week so you can enter into the weekly prize. The prize will be drawn Friday at 4:00!
