The first book we read was:

This book was about a boy who decided that he didn't want his mother's heathly balanced meals anymore so he took the cooking into his own hands. This, of course, lead to Finn cooking only with cookies, chocolate and ice cream, which made him very sick!

The first game we played was Food Alphabet we sat in a circle and each of us had to say a food that started with every letter of the alphabet. It was always hard for the last on sitting in the circle because all the easy ones had already been said!

A: apple, asparagus, almonds.
B:banana, bread.
C: cabbage, cake, corn, cereal.
D: donuts.
E: eggs,eel.
F:fish, french toast,fig.
G: grapes, garlic, guacamole.
H:ham, honey, hot dogs.
I:Ice cream.
J: jam, jello.
K: kiwi, ketchup.

Y: Yogurt
Z: Zucchini.

The second book we read was:
Then we went outside for an egg toss (not with really eggs of course, that would a very big mess!) The most amount of steps that someone took was 20 steps back!

The last book we read was:

After we read this book we thought about all the silly ways we could eat our food. I think the best answer was eating spaghetti using your feet while flying through the air on a trapeze!!

For our craft today we did potato printing!
Here is what you need:

-pre-cut potatoes in various shapes (stars, hearts, squares, circles)
-piece of fabric
-paintbrush
-various colors of paint

Directions
-with paintbrush, paint potato and then stamp onto fabric. It's as easy as that!!

Next week our theme is Play Around the World! So bring your passports.

WEEK 3: Mini PanAm Games

To celebrate the kick off of the PanAm games this week in Toronto, we decided to have our own mini games at the library!

So we decided to have a whole program just of minute to win it games!

The first game we played was "Cookie Face" where you had to move one cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hand. This game is especially fun to watch!

The next game we played was "This Sucks" where you had to move 20 beans from one bowl to the other, sucking them up with a straw!

The next game is called "Keep it up"  Where your task is to keep one feather in the air with only your breath for one full minute.

Then we played "Cereal Bracelets" where you had to try to thread as many cheerios on a pipe cleaner in a minute!!

Since we played so many games today, we didn't have time to make a craft! But we did have time for a snack and for the last 5 minutes we all sat around and ate blueberries and grapes, well deserved for the athletes!

Next week our theme is "Play with Food" so it is going to be a delicious and appetizing week!!

To celebrate the kick off of the PanAm games this week in Toronto, we decided to have our own mini games at the library! To start off the program we had a discussion about all our favourite sports, we all went around and either acted out or said what our favourite sport was. There was swimming, curling, hockey, ringette and a lot of other sports!

The first story we read was:

This was a pretty wordy book but we just flipped through the pictures and read some fun facts about the first Olympic games that were believed to be held as early as the sixth century B.C!

The second book we read was:

This book is absolutely hilarious!! It works best when you read it with two people so I had my volunteer come to the front and act out the skit with me, it was a really funny read.

The last book we read was:

And then on to the games!

The first game we played was a minute to win it challenge called "Sugary Stack Up"

Every child needs one Popsicle stick and 6 sugar cubes.

How to Play:
1. On "Go!" the player places a popsicle stick in their mouth. Using one hand, player places one sugar cube on the end of the popsicle stick. Player continues stacking sugar cubes, one at a time, on top of each other, to make a tower of 6 cubes. In order to win the challenge, the tower must stay standing for a full 3 seconds.
2. If at any time the cubes fall, the player can pick them up and start over, but only one hand can be used.
3. Whoever can stack all six cubes and hold the tower for a full 3 seconds first wins!

We played another minute to win it challenge called "Cookie Face" where you had to move one cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hand. This game is especially fun to watch!

The craft for today was make your own flag! Here's how we did it:

Material
- card stock paper
-paintbrush
-paint

Directions
The kids either made up their own flag or made a canadian flag with their handprint!

The second story we read was:

The last story we read was:

Then, of course, since it was mini PanAm games week we had to play lots of games! So the first game we played was one called "Rainbow Room" and this is how you play:

All you need is a room filled with colorful objects and people, easy!
1. Everyone stands in a circle, except for one person that is chosen to stand in the middle.
2. The person in the middle gets to shout out the name of a colour.
3. Everyone in the circle must then run and try to locate something that is the colour called.
4. The first person to have the correct coloured object wins and now stands in the middle to start the game again.

The next game we played was "What time is it Mr. Wolf?", which is super easy and a really fun way to get everyone moving!

Then it was time for our craft. Today we made our own medals!  We cut out pieces of tissue paper then glue them on to a cardboard circle.

TD Summer Reading Program: Week 2 Ages 2-6

Welcome back to the summer reading program! We had an absolutely super second week, because it was SUPERHERO WEEK! We had a blast talking about all of our favorite superheroes. Our question to start the day was "What are some words to describe Superheroes?" We talked about how superheroes are strong, brave, fast, kind, happy and how they always save the day!
The first story we read was:
We practiced our ABCs with this book, and went through the entire superhero alphabet. Every superhero had their own superpower: from Bubble Boy who blows bubbles at bullies to Goo Girl who shoots great gobs of goo at gangsters.
I asked everyone to think of their own superpower that they would want, some things we talked about were ice powers (just like Elsa) super strength and teleportation!

The second book we read was:

I asked everyone to think of a superhero in their own life, we talked about moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, their siblings..but only sometimes, firefighters, the police, teachers. There are so many heroes in our lives!!

The third book we read was:

We played a couple games following storytime! The first game we played was "Superhero Four Corners" here is how you play:

Pick someone to be "it." This person stands at the front with her back to the group. Designate 4 corners with a different superhero name and picture (We had superman, batman, spider man and captain america) . Start the kids at the center and have them find a corner to stand in, while “it” counts to 10. The "it" person, without looking, calls a superhero. Eliminate the players in the corner that was called out. These players sit down in the middle, where they started. Call out for them to pick a new corner. Repeat until only one player is left. This person is "it" next.

The next game we played was a Kryptonite Hunt. I hid little balls of tinfoil all around the programming room and the children had to go and search for them. When they brought them back to me, I had them complete a task!

Here's how you make the mask.
