Rain Lesson Plan

Rain

Age 2's and 3's, 4's and 5's

1. Storytime – Welcome Song

Storytime is starting, starting, starting.

Storytime is starting, come and listen to me.

2. Read first story "Amy Loves the Rain", "Rain", "Rain Drop Splash", "Rain Romp", or "Rain Talk".

3. Poem: It's Raining, It's Pouring,
It's raining, it's pouring,
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and he
Bumped his head
And he couldn't get up in the morning.

4. Read second story "The Water Hole", "We Hate Rain", or "Who Likes Rain?".

5. Finger play: Eency Weency Spider

The eency-weency spider went up the water spout (walk fingers up )

Down came the rain and washed the spider out (sweep arms down and out)

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain (arms form circle over head)

And the eency-weency spider went up the spout again (walk fingers up again)

6. Crafts: Rainsticks

Cardboard tube, such as from paper towels

Scissors

Tape

Aluminum foil

Dry lentils or unpopped popcorn kernels, about 1 /4 cup

Markers

Step 1

Cut 2 larger circles from a piece of paper. Use scissors to snip notches in the paper circles. These circles will be used to cover the ends of the tube.

Step 2
Cover one end of the tube by taping the notches of one of the circles, and then close them around the end of the tube, allowing them to overlap. Do not cover the other end of tube.

Step 3
Lightly squeeze a 9-inch wide and 22-inch-long piece of aluminum foil into a snake shape. Then, fold the snake in half and very, very loosely twist it into a fat rope.

Step 4
Slip the aluminum foil rope inside the tube. Pour in the 1/4 cup of lentils or popcorn.

Step 5
Cover the other end of the tube with the other paper circle and tape.

Step 6
Kids can use crayons or markers to create their own designs.

To hear the "rain" fall, slowly tip the tube.
