Kindness Project: Planting Seeds

For our fourth week of kindness, we planted beans!

All of our story time books have an underlying theme of kindness. This week we read:

The Dandelion Seed, by Joseph Anthony

The Tiny Seed, by Eric Carle

Sunflower House, by Eve Bunting

The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss

Sidewalk Flowers, by Jon Arno Lawson

Growing Vegetable Soup, by Lois Ehlert

If You Plant a Seed, by Kadir Nelson

Plant a Kiss, by Amy Krause Rosenthal

Planting beans was a fun experience (and very hands on, so not many pictures happened)!

The kids added soil to their cups, then picked their beans. They dug a little hole in the soil, then placed the beans in, covered them up, and watered them. Then they took them home to let them grow!

Next, we're continuing spreading kindness with Friendship Bracelets!

Kindness Project: Random Acts of Kindness

For our third week of kindness, we devoted ourselves to committing random acts of kindness in our community!

All of our story time books have an underlying theme of kindness. This week we read:

But Not the Hippopotamus, by Sandra Boynton

The Very Kind Rich Lady and her One Hundred Dogs, by Chinlun Lee

Duck in the Truck, by Jez Alborough

One Bright Ring, by Gretchen Géser

How to Mend a Heart, by Sara Gillingham

Please Don't Tease Tootsie, by Margaret Chamberlain

Hug Machine, by Scott Campbell

For our craft, we decorated envelopes to hold our own ideas for random acts of kindness!

The we picked random acts of kindness off the board to take and do within the community!
Some of the acts included:
- write a thank you note to a nurse
- bring a candy gram to the fire department
- tape loonies to toys at the dollar store
- hold a door open for someone
- greet everyone you meet with a smile and a wave
- donate socks to a homeless shelter
- donate food to the Little Free Pantry
- write a letter to your grandparents

We had the Random Acts of Kindness envelopes up for the rest of our 6 Weeks of Kindness, and the kids added new ones, or took new ones as they wanted. What a wonderful experience!

Kindness Project: Kindness Postcards

Our 2nd week of story time delved into kindness postcards: we selected random citizens of Sylvan Lake for our story time kids to send postcards to! They drew a picture, and wrote them a message, then put their postcards in the mail!

All of our story time books have an underlying theme of kindness. This week we read:

When I'm Feeling Kind, by Trace Moroney

Good Night, Bat! Good Morning, Squirrel! by Paul Meisel

I Need a Hug, by Aaron Blabey

My Many Colored Days, by Dr. Seuss

Dear Zoo: Animal Shapes, by Rod Campbell

Love From the Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle

Snail Brings the Mail, by Russell Punter & Fred Blunt

Around the World: Who's Been Here? by Lindsay Barrett George

After stories, we made our postcards!

And mailed them!

Here are a couple of responses we got from sending out the postcards!

The RCMP sent us a letter back, as well as hats for the kids to wear!

We received such a wonderful response from the community to our Kindness Project! Can't wait to continue it! Next up: random acts of kindness!

Kindness Project: Bird Feeders

Our first week of kindness dove into bird feeders.

All of our story time books have an underlying theme of kindness. This week we read:

One Love (based on the song by Bob Marley), adapted by Cedella Marley

Little Bird, by Germano Zullo

Hunter and his Dog, by Brian Wildsmith

The Lion & the Mouse, by Jerry Pinkney

Because Amelia Smiled, by David Ezra Stein

Miles of Smiles, by Karen Kaufman Orloff

Hank Finds an Egg, by Rebecca Dudley

After stories, we made our bird feeders!

The best thing about this craft was that we got to munch while we worked! The kids made bird feeders out of Cheerios and pipe cleaners. We chatted about the best places to hang them at home (away from windows, high off the ground), and some kids even hung them on the trees around the library!

Thanks for helping out some hungry birds! Next week, we're making postcards!

6 Weeks of Silly - Costume Party!

Our last week of silly was just that - silly! We dressed up, we played with ribbon sticks, we danced around, and we made some super (and super silly) crafts!

For stories, we read:

My First Book of Superpowers, by Georgia Rucker

Five Little Monkeys Trick-or-Treat, by Eileen Christelow

Fancy Nancy: Too Many Tutus, by Jane O'Connor

Super Heroes: Ready for Action, by Victoria Taylor

My Princess Boy, by Cheryl Kilodavis

Katy Ducky's Happy Halloween, by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Pirate Pete Sets Sail, by Jean-Pierre Jäggi

Baghead, by Jarrett J. Krosoczka

The Costume Party, by Victoria Chess

Then we played and danced with some ribbon/rhythm sticks!

Next we practiced our aim with a superhero-themed bean-toss!

For our craft, we made super silly crowns and bracelets!

For snack we had some delicious apples! Our next story time session is all about kindness!
