Tales for Toddlers - September 21

Welcome back to Tales for Toddlers! This fun program is geared towards children 2 and under, though all are welcome to attend. We read stories, sing songs, play with puppets, and just have fun!

6 Weeks of Colour - Chameleons!

Our Reading Rainbow is all finished! Check it out!

Can you find your hands? 

For our 2nd week of colour, we're looking at the most colourful of lizards: chameleons!

Interesting facts about chameleons:

- Chameleons can rotate their eyes in two different directions, and focus on two objects at once.

- Chameleons are not deaf, but they don't actually have ear openings. They use other senses like tough to detect vibrations and sense movement.

- There are 160 different kinds of chameleons!

Next, we made our craft!

Materials:

- cardstock
-  glue
- tissue paper
- markers

We got to pick a chameleon colour to take home!

For snack, we had apple slices and grapes! Next week: flowers!

6 Weeks of Colour - Rainbows!

Welcome back to Story Time friends! After an amazing summer, we're getting back in the swing of our regular schedule!

We've made some changes to our Story Time themes this year. No more alphabet! This year we're going with themes! Our first theme is colour!

Interesting facts about rainbows: 

- A rainbow is actually a complete circle of light. But, because we usually look at it from the ground, we only see a semi-circle, or arc.

- A "moonbow" is a lunar or nighttime rainbow, produced by light from the moon.

- A "fogbow" is formed by cloud and fog droplets. Fogbows are bigger and broader than a rainbow.

After we finished our craft, we traced our hands to help make a beautiful rainbow! (It's almost finished!)

For our snack, we had some yummy apple slices!

TD Summer Reading Club Week 8: Ages 7-8

Week 8: African Safari 

This is our last week of the Summer Reading Club, so since we have been learning about animals all summer, we decided to go on a safari! To start things off I asked the kids to tell me what types of animals they would find in an African savanna. Some of the answers they came up with were lions, hippos, zebras, giraffes and so much more, we also discussed how you wouldn't find any unicorns there because they live in rain forests! ;)

After we were done talking we read our first book:

Lion Vs. Rabbit by Alex Latimer 

Then we read our second book:

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen

Before we went outside to play we read one last story:

I Broke My Trunk by Mo Willems

After story time was all done we went outside to play Simon Says before we went back inside to make our craft, elephant puppets! Here's how you can too:

Materials:

• Paper plates
• Googly eyes 
• Grey knee-high socks 
• White construction paper 
• Markers
• Hot glue gun 
• Scissors
• Glue / hot glue 

Directions:

1. Take your paper plate and cut a large hole in the middle. 

2. Take your construction paper and cut out two large elephant ear shapes. (I used this stencil). 

3. Allow the kids to decorate their paper plates and ears. 

4. Pull the sock through the hole until there’s about an inch poking out of the inside. Line around the hole with hot glue and put some on the sock as well – press firmly together until it is dry (do not let the kids do this part).

5. Glue googly eyes on the front and glue each ear to both sides of the plate. 

This week we were also lucky enough to get yummy cupcakes and muffins thanks to Andrew and Taylor! Yay!!! 

Doesn't get much better than this!
