TD Summer Reading Program: Week 2 Ages 2-6

Welcome back to the summer reading program! We had an absolutely super second week, because it was SUPERHERO WEEK! We had a blast talking about all of our favorite superheroes. Our question to start the day was "What are some words to describe Superheroes?" We talked about how superheroes are strong, brave, fast, kind, happy and how they always save the day!
The first story we read was:
We practiced our ABCs with this book, and went through the entire superhero alphabet. Every superhero had their own superpower: from Bubble Boy who blows bubbles at bullies to Goo Girl who shoots great gobs of goo at gangsters.
I asked everyone to think of their own superpower that they would want, some things we talked about were ice powers (just like Elsa) super strength and teleportation!

The second book we read was:

I asked everyone to think of a superhero in their own life, we talked about moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, their siblings..but only sometimes, firefighters, the police, teachers. There are so many heroes in our lives!!

The third book we read was:

We played a couple games following storytime! The first game we played was "Superhero Four Corners" here is how you play:

Pick someone to be "it." This person stands at the front with her back to the group. Designate 4 corners with a different superhero name and picture (We had superman, batman, spider man and captain america) . Start the kids at the center and have them find a corner to stand in, while “it” counts to 10. The "it" person, without looking, calls a superhero. Eliminate the players in the corner that was called out. These players sit down in the middle, where they started. Call out for them to pick a new corner. Repeat until only one player is left. This person is "it" next.

The next game we played was a Kryptonite Hunt. I hid little balls of tinfoil all around the programming room and the children had to go and search for them. When they brought them back to me, I had them complete a task!

CRAFT
The craft we did today were superhero masks and a make your own superhero puppet!

Here's how you make the mask.

Materials:
-Foam
-Scissors

3. Punch two holes on either side of the mask and using ribbon, tie two strings so that you can attach it around your head.

Here's how to make your own superhero!

 Materials:
-Brown Paper Bag
-Foam or paper
-Scissors
-Glue Stick
-Pipecleaner
-Markers

Directions:
1. Cut out your superhero mask, chest plate and cape and glue them onto your brown paper bag.
2. Using markers decorate your superhero with eyes, stars and what ever you'd like!
3. Glue your pipe cleaner arms to the side. (You may also need to staple them to make them extra sturdy)

The first story we read was:
We all thought it would be SUPER cool if we could go to Superhero school. The only thing was that at this superhero school you had to learn math..and no one wanted to do that.
The second book we read was:

I asked everyone to think of a superhero in their own life, we talked about moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, their siblings..but only sometimes, firefighters, the police, teachers. There are so many heroes in our lives!!

TD Summer Reading Program Week 2: Ages 9-12

Welcome back to the summer reading program! We had an absolutely super second week, because it was SUPERHERO WEEK! We had a blast talking about all of our favorite superheroes. Our question to start the day was "What are some words to describe Superheroes?" We talked about how superheroes are strong, brave, fast, kind, happy and how they always save the day!

To start off our Superhero day we had an obstacle course. The kids had to do 15 jumping jacks, hop over 5 pool noodles, climb under a chair, toss a bean bag into a pot, then had an egg spoon race back to the beginning. The kids were split into two teams so we had a competition to see which side could finish first!

Our second game of  the day was a kryptonite hunt. Hidden all around the outside of the library and through the trees were little balls of Kryptonite, we had to go on a hunt to see who could find the most. But just like Superman, we couldn't touch the Kryptonite, so the kids had to figure out a way to bring it back to the doors without using their hands. They used their elbows, feet, sweaters and even their teeth.

The last thing we did for the day was an activity, craft and snack all rolled into one! The kids were split up into four different groups and sat at a specific superhero table; we had a Spiderman, Superman, Batman and Captain America table. First off we decorated brown paper bags with markers, stickers, foam and glitter glue. Then we play a trivia game, I asked different trivia questions on superheroes and the table who got the answer right could come up and fill their treat back with different snacks!
