Weekend Boredom Busters: Spring & Bunnies

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters on Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Spring is here!

Spring is here (but it might not look like it with all that snow)! But, we all know it will come soon with all its beauty and freshness. Meanwhile, at home we can start getting ready for our spring time and the coming Easter celebration! What spring time doesn’t have a bunny? Bunnies are adorable, aren’t they?

There are many things you can do with your kiddos at home, and you can teach them something too. This activity will help your kids to get into spring’s mud, get connected with some special activities, and talk about something they just love!

This activity is geared towards kids in pre-K or Kindergarten, but everyone in the family can participate: reading aloud, helping with the online search, adding their own ideas, etc.!

You can adapt and reuse this activity using other animals: butterflies, ducks, horses, etc.! Ask the kids what animals they’d like to learn about it and plan your next session!

Bunnies!
1    Read aloud a story about bunnies: you can use those available in our digital library https://ebook.yourcloudlibrary.com/library/prl/Featured?media=all&src=lib, or you can use your own books at home!
Tip: You can read more than one story, use as many your kids want to!
From our Digital library:

1       Search online for bunny facts: What can they eat? What color are they?  etc. Check this link out:

Tip: Kids can assist you with the research!
2
Make a circle with your kids and have conversation about the bunny facts that they just learned. Maybe you have a bunny as a pet or your friend has one, so your kids can talk about it. Talk about films they’ve seen bunnies in, or times they’ve spotted them outside. You are going to be amazed about their answers and ideas.

Tip: Record a short video about bunny facts! Each kid can have a turn to explain one fact! Share with us!

3       Craft time:  What you will need? Construction paper, (white colour or another light colour and one dark colour), you can use also white paper and some markers to colour the ears, googly eyes or a black marker, cotton balls or pompoms, white glue, and scissors.
Check this website for instructions: https://thesimpleparent.com/letter-of-the-week-crafts-b-is-for-bunny/

We hope you liked this idea. Have fun and stay safe!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day and get your family engaging in some Spring fun!

This weekend's theme is Get Moving!

Family Yoga: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=family+yoga

Fun for the whole family, and gets your body read to move around and enjoy the day! Find the best place in the house to do this together as a family. If you have an HDMI cable, connect your computer to the TV to watch on the big screen.

Pokemon Go - Around the Lake

There are many active Pokémon Go hot-spots in Sylvan Lake, especially along Lakeshore Drive. Being mindful of social distancing, and of course the weather, bundle up, grab your phone, and trek down to the lake to "catch 'em all!".

When you get home, check out some free Pokémon colouring pages!

And even if you don't play Pokémon Go, it's still a great time to bundle up and head out for a walk. Fresh air is good for you! Take some pictures while you're out, and share them on Instagram with the hashtag: #SylvanLakePhotoWalk

DANCE PARTY!!!

Let loose and get ready to wiggle! Turn up the tunes and get those hips waggling! Dance like nobody's watching, even though your kids definitely are! For real though, your kids take their cues from you, so don't worry about looking silly, and just have fun!

Let us know who has the best moves, you or your kids!

Hopefully these activities help break the day and get your family engaging in some fun physical activity.

Boredom Busters: Exploring Space

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Watch for weekend Boredom Busters Saturday and/or Sunday. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Exploring Space!

NASA Media Library: https://images.nasa.gov/

In 2017, NASA made their entire media library publicly accessible and copyright free. They have some amazing, stunning images for kids to explore. You can scroll through their "most popular" images, or search for specific images.

Try searching your star sign! Below: "Stormy Seas in Sagittarius"

NASA also has a Youtube Livestream of NASA TV!

Check out some fun astronaut facts for preschoolers and toddlers:

Balloon Stamping Solar System Craft: https://www.iheartartsncrafts.com/balloon-stamping-solar-system-craft-kids/

You can do lots with this activity, before and after. Blow up a bunch of balloons, draw faces on them, tie a few of them together with string/ribbon and make a game out of it!

Then, when you're done with all those shenanigans, you can use the balloons to dip in paint and make your own planets on paper.

Toothbrushes are great for doing splatter paint, and you can buy them in pairs at the dollar store.

Follow up this activity with some Solar System Bingo!

Balloon Stamping Solar System Craft For Kids

This activity can be adapted to whatever materials you have on hand. If you don't have paper plates, just use regular construction paper, or cut out 2-3 circles from thinner paper and glue them together. If you don't have shape cutters, just have the kids draw their own shapes and cut them out. Regular paint brushes will work if you don't have cotton balls and clothes pins. Use what you have, and let their creativity lead the way.

Boredom Busters: Art at Home

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. Weekend blogs will go out Saturday mornings. See which ones you can do at home, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of the blog.

Today's theme is Art!

Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems!

Mo Willems is a beloved children's author/illustrator, bringing some of our favourite characters to life, like Gerald, Piggy, and of course, the Pigeon. Starting March 16th, kids can join Mo for Lunch Doodles, where Mo welcomes kids into his virtual studio, guiding kids through drawing activities using his favourite characters as inspiration.

Episode One is titled Welcome to Mo’s Studio – and it’s live now!

Snow Painting: https://happyhooligans.ca/painting-the-snow/

There are so many ways that you can do this activity. Break out the tempera paints and brushes, if you have them handy at-home.

If you have animals in your yard and are worried about them ingesting the paint, you can also do this activity with food colouring and water, which is what we've done in storytime in the past. Empty squirt bottles work great, but you can use spray bottles. Get creative and see how many different ways you can paint your yard and the snow in it!

Egg Carton Flowers: https://www.iheartartsncrafts.com/egg-carton-flowers-kids-craft/

See how many flowers you and your kids can make! A wonderful bouquet? A flower garden? Or even just a couple flowers to stick in a cup to brighten up the kitchen!

If you don't have any paper straws at home, pipe cleaners work great as well! The possibilities are endless!

Here's another fun flower painting project

Hopefully these activities help break up the day and get your family engaging in some creative and interesting art projects.

Boredom Busters - At Home Sensory Play

Hello all,

We are temporarily reviving our Children's Blog to provide some resources for families who are stuck at home during this period of social distancing due to COVID-19. We will put together a variety of activities for you and your families every day at 1:00 pm. See which ones you can do, and if you get the chance, share the results with us on any of our social media platforms, which will be listed at the bottom of this blog.

Today's theme is Sensory Play!

Frozen Dinosaur Rescue: https://theimaginationtree.com/frozen-dinosaur-eggs-sensory-play/

This is a relatively cheap and easy sensory play activities, one that you can replicate as many times as you'd like. You can freeze the dinosaurs in balloons, or as we've done in the Dinosaur Dig, just freeze them in muffin tins.

Your kids will come up with all sorts of fun ways to get the dinosaurs out of the ice, from different tools to adding salts and soaps. To help with cold fingers, it's a good idea to have warm water on hand.

For a better sensory experience, add different food colouring to each dinosaur - it'll make a great visual display!

Hot Chocolate Cloud Dough: https://sugarspiceandglitter.com/hot-chocolate-cloud-dough/

While you may want to avoid doing sensory plays that involve food products, if you happen to have a good supply of flour, hot chocolate mix, and oil on hand, this is a wonderfully aromatic sensory play.

You can add any household items to shape and form the dough for your little one to play with.

Check out another great cloud dough activity here.

Bubble Foam: https://busytoddler.com/2019/04/bubble-foam-baking-bin/

If there was ever a  perfect sensory activity to do when encouraging good hygiene, this just might be it! It's such a simple concept - sudsy soap and water, but you can do so much with it!

As a bonus, if the kids spill, they're really just doing some extra cleaning! Add any toys for the kids to play with, from bath toys to baking tools. The possibilities are limitless!

Hopefully these activities help break up the day and get your family engaging in some creative and interesting sensory play.
