Five pretty valentines waiting at the store.

(Insert child's name) bought one and then there were four.

Four pretty valentines shaped like a "V"

(Insert child's name) bought one and then there were three.

Three pretty valentines said "I love you"

(Insert child's name) bought one and then there were two.

Two pretty valentines, this was so much fun.

(Insert child's name) bought one and then there was one.
One pretty valentine sitting on the shelf.

I felt sorry for it, so I bought it for myself!

6. Craft: Friendship Blossoms
Here, two classic Valentine's Day gifts — flowers and candy — combine to make one sweet treat.
Materials:

Scrapbooking paper, foam hearts , Scissors, Lollipops, Tape

Instructions

1. For each, cut three heart-shaped petals, two leaves, and two flower centers from scrapbooking paper or card stock.
2. Poke a small hole in each, crease the petals as shown, and slide the pieces onto a lollipop stem. Tape the bottom to secure.

The fourth little groundhog squirmed, "The sun is too bright!" (cover eyes)
The fifth little groundhog squeaked' "My shadow I see!" (look over shoulder at shadow)
"I'm not staying out here! No, siree! Not ME! (shake head "no")
"Back to my burrow I'm going to creep." (fingers creep)
"And for six more weeks I'm going to sleep!" (eyes closed, hands by face)

6. Craft: Popup Groundhog
You will need:
Brown construction paper, wiggle eyes, scrap of white craft foam, popsicle stick, scrap of black craft foam, white glue, markers, foam cup

Instructions:
Cut two small oval shapes from the brown paper (these need to be about as long as your index finger and about 5cm wide). Place a thin line of glue around one of the ovals leaving a gap at the bottom, and stick the other oval on top. Cut out two feet and a head shape from the brown foam and glue these to the top oval. Cut out a tiny white rectangle for the teeth and a tiny black oval for the nose. Glue the eyes nose and teeth to the head and leave to dry. When the glue is dry add some details with black pen. Cut slits in the top of the cup to make it look "grassy" and carefully poke a small hole in the bottom of the cup. Attach your puppet to one end of the popsicle stick. Slide the popsicle stick into the hole, so that your groundhog sits in the cup. Slide the popsicle stick up and down so your groundhog pops in and out of his burrow to check the weather! Can he see his shadow?

7. Craft: Polar Bear Puppet

Materials: Styrofoam cup, felt or cotton pad round, Wiggly eyes, Glue, Black paper White paper

Black marker Scissors

Directions:

Cut head and arm shapes out of white craft paper. Cut a small circle out of a cotton round and glue to the head. Cut a black nose out of black construction paper and two small ears out of white construction paper and glue on the cotton round circle. Draw a mouth with a black marker. Add wiggly eyes and glue to the Styrofoam cup as shown in picture. Glue arms to the side of cup.

Lives a bird that’s quite a sight (make circles with fingers and put to eyes like binoculars)
With his suit of black and white. (run hands along side of body, then tummy)

He can swim, but he can’t fly. (swim and shake head “yes”, fly and shake head “no”)

The penguin is a funny guy!

5. Craft: Penguin Finger Puppets
4”x4” square of black construction paper, Scrap of orange construction paper, 2 small wiggle eyes, Scissors, White craft glue, Tape, Pattern
How to make it:
Use the pattern to cut the head and puppet body from the black square. Place your pointing finger onto the white construction paper and trace around it. Cut it out the finger shape with the scissors and place it in the middle of the black square for the penguin’s stomach. If it’s too long, trim the bottom before gluing in place. Cut a small triangle from the orange construction paper, round the top of the beak if you like. Glue the beak, point facing down, to the face. Glue two wiggle eyes above the beak. Let the glue dry for about 15-20 minutes. Carefully wrap the sides of the penguin loosely around your finger. Have someone help you tape it together in the back.

Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day is January 27th and we are celebrating with a campfire style sing-a-long here at the library. It runs from 1-2 pm on Wednesday. There will be singing, storytellers, a literacy bingo prize draw and refreshments. Please join us!! Literacy Bingo cards are available at the library now.

3. Fingerplay: Itsy Bitsy Spider

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout, down came the rain and washed the spider out. Out came the sun and dried up all the rain so the itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the spout again!

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the kitchen wall, whoosh went the fan and made the spider fall, off went the fan, no longer did it blow, so the itsy bitsy spider, back up the fan did go.

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the big oak tree, she slipped on a limb and landed next to me, out came the sun and dried up all the rain, so the itsy bitsy spider, went right back up again.

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up without a stop, she spun a silky web right at the very top, she wove and spun and when her web was done, the itsy bitsy spider, rested in the sun.

6. Craft: Paper Plate Streamer Ring
Paper Plates, Streamers, Markers

Cut the middle out of a paper plate so that you have a ring. You can decorate the ring if you want to, but it's really not necessary. Then staple crepe paper streamers around three quarters of the ring on the outside. The kids then hold onto the ring at the spot without any streamers and run in the breeze. You can also use ribbon, strips of paper, or yarn instead of streamers.
