Calling all book enthusiasts! We've started a new monthly program:
B.Y.O.B. (bring your own book) Book Club.
We'll
meet the second Monday of every month to discuss books that we've read
recently, or are currently reading. Ones that we've enjoyed will go into
our monthly Recommended Reads.
Our Recommended Reads for November are:
End of Days, by Eric Walters
"The end is near as an asteroid streaks toward the earth. The collision
is certain and the world and all life forms on it will end. Competing
schemes, beliefs and plans swirl as one young boy unwittingly becomes a
major part of one attempt to allow humanity to survive." -

A Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin
"Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the
seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and
winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in
the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural
forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center
of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and
unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal
cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a
tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and
bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.
Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a
tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young
dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a
determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots
and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of
the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the
balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game
of thrones." -

City of the Lost & A Darkness Absolute, by Kelley Armstrong
"Don’t look for Rockton on any map of the Yukon. This tiny,
off-the-grid town doesn’t exist. Neither do the people in it. They’re
all on the run from their pasts, needing a place where they can
disappear for a few years.
Casey Butler has come to Rockton mostly to help her friend escape a
brutal ex-husband…but Casey may also be fleeing a murder she didn’t
quite get away with. And as she discovers, the town is in rather
desperate need of a police detective, particularly one with homicide
experience." -

Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen
"As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed
by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most
Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great
Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety (or ninety-three, he’s not quite
sure), the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living
hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge
of caring for the circus menagerie.
It was there that he met Marlena, the
beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted
animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the
great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew
among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, was
their only hope for survival." -
