1000 Books Week Eighteen / October Events

Lots of fun stuff happening at the library this October! Hazel Hutchins, award-winning Canadian children's author, will be coming to the library on Wednesday, October 17th for an "Adults Writing for Children" workshop, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. This is a free, drop-in program! Hope to see you there!

Saturdays in October we'll be starting a Lap-Sit program for children 0-3. Program runs Saturdays from 10:15 - 10:45 am. Children can come with Mommy or Daddy to experience nursery rhymes, fairy tales, songs, and puppet stories. This program is free, registration required - space is limited!

Local photographer Rob Hamill will be displaying his art in the library October 5-7. Rob's pieces will all be for sale, so if you're looking to add to your collection, come by the library and check out his exhibit!

October 13th is Pirate Day! Join us from 1-2 pm for high-seas adventures! Dress like a pirate, talk like a pirate, and win some pirate treasure! This children's program is free, registration required - space is limited!

On October 27th, the Sylvan Lake Library will be hosting Sylvan Lake's first Zombie Walk. Come to the library at 3:30 to prepare for this event - we'll be roaming around the lake shore, showing off our best zombie walks, limps, snarls, and more! But watch out - there will be a Zombie Annihilation Squad poised to take out a few zombies along the way! Prizes will be given out at the end of the event, so follow us back to the library at the end of the walk! The Zombie Walk should end around 5:30 pm.

Quite a busy month!

More and more children are winning prizes by reading! Congratulations to Jacob for bringing back his reading sheet, and getting a cute little stuffed animal!

The 1000 Books For Kindergarten program welcomes Koen, who recently signed up! Happy reading!

Our last Star Reader of the Week was Raiden. This week's Star Reader is Adam! Congratulations!

Our last Book of the Week was "Baby Beluga", a beloved sing-along book. Our eighteenth Book of the Week is "The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians", by Carla Morris.

"Every day after school Melvin goes to the library. Everything has its place in the library and Melvin likes it that way. And his favorite people—Marge, Betty, and Leola—are always in their places, behind the reference desk.

Crafts: Toilet Roll Bird

Materials: toilet rolls, construction paper, googly eyes, glue, markers

Precut wing, tail and head crest shapes from rolls.  Cut rolls on one end to make a v shape. Have participants glue on wings, tail and head crests. Glue on googly eyes, add details with markers.

1000 Books Week Seventeen

Things are going really well in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Congratulations to Linaya for bringing back her next reading sheet - she's up to 150 books now!

This week's "Star Reader" is Raiden!

Last week's Book of the Week was "This Little Piggy's Book of Manners", a charming tale about those who do good.

Our seventeenth Book of the Week is "Baby Beluga", song by Raffi, illustrated by Ashley Wolff.

"The song about this small, white whale has as its hero probably the best loved of all Raffi's creations. Children who are learning about the interdependence of all life on Earth, and of the crucial importance of preserving the fragile environment, will get a first, cheerful lesson about the natural world by becoming acquainted with enchanting Baby Beluga, swimming wild and free with his mother in the deep blue sea. He and his friends are somewhat anthropomorphic, in the interests of cuddliness, but this does the message no harm . The illustrations are a joy to behold, and the song has a rhythm and rhyme that make it easy to remember and sing."

If your child is between the ages of 0 and 3, we are starting a Lap-Sit program in October. The program will run every Saturday from 10:15 - 10:45 am. We will provide a combination of songs, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and puppet stories. Register now for this free program, as spaces are limited.

Also, we will have a guest reader in the library on Mondays at 4:00. Bring your child to the Children's area for drop-in story time with Grandma Generous.

Craft: Cut Paper Apple

Materials: small paper plates, cut pieces of red construction paper, brown construction paper stems, green construction paper leaves, glue

Cover paper plate with glue and stick on red pieces of paper until it is completely covered. Glue on stem on the front and 2 leaves on the back of the plate. Punch a hole big enough for a finger if they want a worm eating their apple.

1000 Books Week Sixteen

Anyone else feel that familiar chill in the air this morning? Fall is definitely upon us!

The library is busy once more with children and parents coming to morning story time! We missed you!

Last week's Star Reader was Huston - a very smiley guy!

Huston just got his prize and picture taken to display in the library on Thursday, so we'll let him stay up for this week. We'll draw for the next Star Reader on Friday.

Our last Book of the Week was "The Cow Loves Cookies", a silly story about a certain cow's favorite treat! After all, who doesn't love cookies?!

Our sixteenth Book of the Week is "This Little Piggy's Book of Manners", by Kathryn Madeline Allen.

Oops!

Just like little piggies, it's easy for young children to sometimes forget their manners. Here's a jaunty picture book that will make the learning experience all the more fun."

Materials: construction paper folded and trimmed, two straps, stapler, markers, stickers, glue.
