Week 3: Camping Ages 9-12

Week 3
9-12
Camping
Question: Have you been camping yet this summer?
Book:
This week we read "
Sandcastle Contest" by Robert Munsch.

Activity:
Find the missing object
I split the children up into two teams, each team had a different colored object to find. They closed their eyes while I hid the object outside. Once I was done hiding the objects I came back to the kids and would yell "GO!". Whichever team was first to find and bring their object back to me won.
Craft:
This week for our craft we made s’mores out of popsicle sticks.
Materials needed:
8 Popsicle sticks for each child
Yellow and brown construction paper (for cracker and chocolate), liquid glue, and paint
Instructions:
1. First I had the kids put together their s'more to do this they glued the Popsicle sticks side by side to make a flat surface to be the marshmallow.
2. I had them paint their Popsicle sticks white, like a marshmallow
3. While waiting for their marshmallow to dry they cut out their chocolate and graham cracker to complete their s'more
4. Once the paint was dry they glued their construction paper onto the marshmallow to make it look like a s'more
5. The final step was to draw a face on their s'more

Some of the faces that the kids painted on their s'mores were quite impressive :)

Week 3: Camping ages 7-8

Week 3
7-8
Camping Trip
Question:
What would be one thing that you would bring with you if you were to go camping?
Books:
"Scaredy  Squirrel goes camping"  by Mélanie Watt this is a fast paced book with lots happening in every image!

"The Sandcastle Contest" by Robert Munsch. This is a funny book about a boy who makes a realistic sandcastle while on a beach vacation with his family.

Activity:
Steal the Camping Supplies!
The basic idea is that there are two teams, and three dividing lines (ie. two halves of a playing field). Put an equal amount of the objects behind both baselines.

Each team needs to aim to steal as many of the objects as possible, without getting caught.

To steal an object the player must successfully make it to the other teams baseline without being tagged. Once they are there they can steal 1 object and release 1 captive team-mate (if there are any).

If the player is tagged while on the other teams half of the playing field, they are caught and must wait at the oppositions baseline until they are rescued.

Craft:
Hand print Fire
Materials: Red construction paper, Black contruction paper, chalk, glue, strips of brown construction paper, fiery colours of tissue paper, glue, and scissors.
Directions:
1. I had the kids trace their hand on a red piece of construction paper
       2. After tracing their hand I had them cut it out and glue in onto the black paper
3.After gluing their hand onto the black paper, I had the kids glue two strips of brown paper under the hand to resemble a fire.
      4. After gluing the logs on, I had them glue pieces of tissue paper onto the bottom of their hand to add dimension
    5. After the fire was complete the kids drew stars and moons on their black paper.
(I changed the Craft to work better for my group and the materials I had, you could definitely improvise for this craft)

Snack:

Carrots
Graham Crackers
Apples

"Maisy goes camping" by Lucy Cousins, the kids though this book was really funny, there was lots of laughter when this book was read.

Activity:
Campfire songs
We created a pretend fire on the grass, after we stood around the fire and sang various songs, we ended it with going on a bear hunt

Craft:
Lightning bugs
Today for our craft we made fire flies on black paper

The first book we read was "This is a Moose" by Richard T. Morris
The kids get a real kick out of this book, it's a funny book with lots happening.

The second book we read by Robert Munsch. "Moose!" got a lot of good feedback from the kids. Who doesn't love Robert Munsch?

Activity:
    Canadian Goose (British Bulldog):
The bulldogs stand in the middle of the play area. All remaining players stand at one end of the area (home). The aim of the game is to run from one end of the field of play to the other, without being caught by the bulldogs. When a player is caught, they become a bulldog themselves.

Craft:
Canadian Moose craft
This week for our craft, I gave each of the kids an 11x17 sheet of manila tag. I also gave them each a moose template to cutout.  First I had them draw a landscape on their paper, then I had them color their moose, cut out the pieces of the moose’s body and place it in the appropriate spot on their paper. This was a really fun craft, the kids seemed to enjoy the end result of their creation.
Snack:

Week 2: ages 2-6, Canadian Animals

Week 2
2-6
Canadian Animals
Books:
"This is a Moose" by Richard T. Morris
"This is a Moose" is a really fun book, it's goofy and gets all the children laughing.

The second book we read was called "Up the Creek" by Nicholas Oldland.
This was a great read-aloud book, with some famous Canadian animals!
The third book we read was "Moose, Goose, and Animals on the Loose" by Geraldo Valério.
This was a great book to show all of the different animals that we have here in Canada.
Activity:
       Who’s baby?
I hung up several different pictures of different Canadian animals as adults. I gave a pack of baby animal pictures to the kids. The children had to place the baby animal picture in a bucket underneath the mother or father animal. The kids seemed to really enjoy this activity, I think they really enjoyed looking at the images of baby animals.
Craft:
         Moose Puppet
For this weeks craft we did a moose puppet. The materials we used were brown paper bags, googly eyes, brown construction paper, glue sticks, and wax crayons.
1.  First I had the child trace their hands on the brown construction paper
2. I had them cut out their hands (with help of an adult)
     3. After cutting out their hands, I had them glue their hands on to the paper bag as if they were antlers
4.  After gluing the antlers on, I had the kids glue on some googly eyes
5. After they glued on their googly eyes, I let them add a nose and design their moose however they would like
If some children were finished before siblings, I printed out some coloring pages that they could color while they were waiting.
